Very Cheap; Very Easy mat - what do you think?
« on: December 13, 2015, 02:27:59 PM »
I was thinking of using a Heroquest board for a game at my son's house and mentioned it here:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=85306.0 Some of the replies made me think more about what could be done and then out of nowhere came this:

It's carpet underlay with a bit of random white sprayed on. It rolls up nicely and I thought it wouldn't be bad for away-day games at places without a suitable mat. I thought it looked OK - am I fooling myself?

Cost of mat - nothing. Work - a couple of strokes of a scalpel blade to get 3'x3' and about 90 seconds for spraying. Can of white spray £3.95 from Wilcos.

Nice and it has a good snow/ice effect.

Looks good.
You could add texture to it with sand glued on, or perhaps even cut out some depressions to give a bit more relief, but it works fine as is.

So I showed this to my wife:

"Hey, don't we have some of thi--"
"No."
"Left Over from when we--"
"No."
"I'm sure there's enough to do both the closet floor and--"
"No."

Are you referring to my carefully researched simulation of the effects of snow and ice thawing and refreezing...?  :D

:D My experience was exactly the opposite. We had a carpet fitted last week and there was some underlay left and my wife said to me "Couldn't you use this for something?" and I replied "No, I don't think so" and she said "I'm sure you could" and I said "Oh, OK, I'll hang on to it" and then the penny dropped when I turned it over and saw the white/grey blotches on the reverse.

Sounds familiar.
