Quick Wall spell markers
« on: December 15, 2015, 08:21:50 PM »
The "Wall" spell is quite popular in our group, but so far we've been making due with folded paper markers, which, frankly, didn't look very pretty.
So, this weekend I built some quick Wall markers with foam on an MDF base.
Here they are in bare, unpainted form. I made six in total:

I made them a bit thicker than you would expect for Wall Spell templates, so I can also use them as regular walls in Frostgrave or other games.
After building them I basecoated them with a 50/50 PVA and black paint mixture, to harden and seal the surface of the foam.
And here is the first half painted today:

Painting them was simply a matter of grabbing a 2" round paintbrush, mixing cheap hobby paint black and white to the desired shade of grey and drybrushing. I started with a dark mixture and after every drybrushing pass I added more white until I hade the final shade and contrast I was looking for.
Quick, messy, fun and resulting in some nice Wall templates.  :)

Very neat. I definitely add this to my to-do-list.

Well, you made those up in a hurry now, excellent. They will come in handy next time  ;)

Those look great painted up. Did you cut the bricks yourself ?

I had tried something different, but yours look good enough that I wan't to try that out.

Gunbird, they certainly will. ;) That's why I made them.

Adam, yup, I cut them from a sheet of XPS insulation foam and textured them with a scrunched up ball of aluminum foil.
I really like your version as well, I'll have to keep that in mind if I need to make some more.

Great looking walls. I didn't imagine the wall spell as stone walls (silly of me really as its a wall spell) i imagined it as a wall of fire, but a stone wall will look like a more solid obstacle. Thanks for sharing

Great idea....I need to build some of these...my idea of the wall was a more translucent type of barrier but I prefer yours...consider the idea stolen

Thank you, guys!
I guess every wizard/school of magic has their own version of the Wall spell. Force barriers and sheets of fire are awesome ways to do walls* (in fact, I may even decide to do somewhat more "exotic" walls, should I ever need more markers in the future), it's just that my wizard learned the "solid pile of hewn rock" version of the spell.  :D

*: Heck, in a pinch you could even squeeze one out of a handful of that oyumaru/instant mold stuff if you have it on hand...

Very nice work!
(For the record, my wizard uses the 'hack out a rectangle of grey packing foam' method  :D

Wall of Fire had been one of the first things I considered, but I decided against it because nothing in the rules prevents soldiers from climbing the summoned wall.

I am considering making the next one out of ice. Ice seems pretty appropriate for Frostgrave.
