New Quinjet for Christmas! - toy alert. Now painted (03/01)
« on: December 25, 2015, 04:10:52 PM »
So yesterday, while browsing my local Disney store for another First Order Snowspeeder, I came across this:

Marvel Avengers Age of Ultron Cycle Blast Quinjet Vehicle

After a quick check on the internet (free wi-fi on the shopping malls is great) for its size, I ended buying it. I was not disappointed, it isn't as large as the original Quinjet toy, but I think it will look great as stealth transport for 28mm figures or as a big one for 15mm.

The only problem that I see is that the rear door doesn't open and we get instead a ramp (to shoot the motorbike out) on the lower bottom of the craft. The cabin can be remodeled to get some seated figures in there (it's big enough). And without further ado, were are the photos with a AT-43 figure.

I'll try and paint it this week  ;)

Very nice indeed; I can certainly see the applications.

How much does it set one back?

Ha, cool! I recognise that UNA model :D
Awesome plane. Looking forward to seeing a painted version.

It cost me €30 directly at the Disney store.

Yep, these were your UNA guys ;) I'm planning on painting the Quinjet using some of the new Humbrol Multi-effect sprays.

These were like $20 in department stores with the higher priced version.
Just have to construct an underbelly. Wanted to get one of these as well. I have the other for now.
Looking forward to your finished project.

Heads up folks, the UK Disney store has it for £9.90.

It's a pity I can't buy there - it automatically transfers me to the Portuguese one  :?

At least you got one; only quintet on the US store is a Lego build.

However, I should complain? I've a few of the last toys left.  :D

Small update with lousy phone pictures. First time using Humbrol spray paints!

Grey Primer
+ points: very good coverage in a couple of passes; doesn't have a very active smell - I used a mask anyway; fast drying time
 - points: the can leaked from its lower seams even without being used and stored in a controlled environment - the only spray cans that do that are usually Chinese ones...

Black Gloss
+ points: once again, very good coverage and not a very active smell; fast drying time (but it takes 30 minutes for it to turn really glossy)
-  points: none

Green Multi-Effect (word of warning: I got this can at a discount bin - it was intact, with no leakage - but all Humbrol Multi-Effect were heavily discounted. My problems could be an effect of a defective can)
+ points: fast drying time; really self-levels after drying.
-  points: it takes some passes to build up the layers and to get the metallic sheen you see on the cover of the can; the smell of the spray is pretty intense and it lingers for a couple of hours even in well-ventilated area.

Tomorrow I'll break out the brushes and acrylics to detail the bird and I'll take proper pictures once it's done. But in the overall, I was very pleased with the Humbrol spray paints. The multi-effect was a bit of a pain to apply but the effect is damn nice with the right light on.

Thanks!

And after some time painting the cockpit windows, I'm very satisfied with the final result, specially taking in account that it was the first time I tried doing something similar.

And the paint really shines with the proper light:

Overall it has been a great little project for me. In February I'll try and get another one, at a lower price.

Like the effect on the windows makes it look rather mean.

Thanks, that was the idea  :D

I've always wanted to do something similar after seeing it done by dwartist. But I could never really master it, until I found a tutorial for a simpler version of that kind of painting technique:
