Random encounters in Thaw
« on: December 25, 2015, 06:03:47 PM »
So,  in the next few weeks we are going to start our Thaw of the Lich Lord campaign and I had a couple of questions for the groups that have played it in the past.

The random encounter table on page 52 states "this table should be used for any scenarios created by players that are supposed to be taking place during this time period".

This seems to imply that the scenarios in Thaw shouldn't have random encounters. All of the Thaw encounters have creatures or cultists to contend with already. Should we bu using the Thaw random encounter charts for the campaign?

What level have people started the campaign on? I was thinking of starting a fresh set of warbands and doing the Golem scenarios first putting the 3 warbands on about level 5-7 or so I guess. Will this be too advanced for the start of Thaw?

Nahh, it's just slightly unfortunate choice of words. Even playing the scenarios in the book, it is still a player "creating" them by setting up the table and so forth. Plus any other scenarios you might place in between should then also use this table.

I like the random encounter chart in the main book it has a nice range of power levels and you really don't know what will show up next. That being said you can always modify it for any campaign by just switching a few of the encounters to something appropriate. For example adding more undead and cultists for litchlord, or adding more constructs to Golem. I'm even tinkering with ideas for "major or Greater" monster encounters (they have been posted in another thread if you want to check them out).

Personally, I'm in favour of having more encounters. I think it spices things up a little and distracts players from murdering each other.

My group were role players who stopped roleplaying when our real life , grown up lives got in the way so much that only 2 or 3 of us ever seem to be in the same pace at the same time making ongoing campaigns rather tough. So, Frostgrave has started to scratch the rpg itch. We are more used to co-op dungeon mastered narrative games and this would be so easy with Frostgrave.
