Empress PLA test paint
« on: February 06, 2016, 11:18:53 PM »
Finally made a start on my Empress PLA from the Kickstarter for use in Evil Bear's OSC, among other things - they'll be doing double duty as Sino Union for my eventual Modern Rome setting too.

On to the pics - egads I hadn't realised they were so huge when I uploaded them!
That camo's a pain in the proverbial to imitate.

1st dude - taken while the paint on the base was still wet,

This one was actually taken before I decided to darken the bases....

With the rest of the first section:

It looks a lot rougher here than it does in person, and those mould lines really show up in the photos in a way they don't in person! :( I'll have to take some more 'arms length' and less flash photos...

Thoughts?

For pixelated camo patterns try dabbing the paint on with an old brush cut down to a stub. Make sure the paint is semi-dry by dapping on your palette or wiping off the excess with a tissue first. I find that gives a nice effect. Used judiciously along the edge of camouflage patterns on vehicles  it can also be a good way of getting a  spray painted effect just using a brush.

Nice work! Try taking the photos from a little further away and then crop them down. I had the same problem when I tried to take photos of mine. And yep the dabbing effect works and makes it a bit more subtle

Of to a great start. Looking forward to hearing more about your fictional setting.

You are magnifying the figure 5 to 6 times, it's going to show any and every flaw, I photoed my last batch of figures and they had white spots from the varnishing which i hadn't seen on the live figures. A big disappointment, but when I looked at the figures again IRL I could barely see the white spots.

I think he looks good, and it's how he looks on the table that counts.

The advice re the dabbing sounds good though.
