They came from planet Z...
« on: January 01, 2016, 04:46:16 PM »
A while ago, I bought some Sharclon from Heresy Miniatures... and they ended up like this:

Since then, I have been VERY distracted with my Squat project... but have decided to shelve that for a while and work on some more Sharclon... so I bought a few more and have got as far as this with the next ten:

I haven't got much further on the troops than that (at the moment)... but I have been ticking along with a transport :) ...

Before paint:

... and with a unifying coat of primer:

I have consciously tried to give it an 'early films' style so have kept it simple with clean areas. The small dome on the top is the cockpit, the domes front and rear are teleportation gates (there are no doors) and the 'radome' on the top is the weapon turret/shield generator. The weapon fires in any direction from the disc.

The basic idea for paint is dark silver with glowy bits :).

That's the start... I have another 15 Sharclon and a flier to convert too. Hopefully, they will end up in the same rough style (I plan on converting a few of the troops to carry heavy weapons).

They live for war, apparently.  ;)

Loving the transport; very TOS indeed!

Keep it up; this should become an interesting force...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Nice kitbash, wish I could have those styrene skills  :o

I have some disposable razors just like those  lol How did you glue them to the styrene? Superglue?

You have dealt with the fact that you traded shorties frome one universe for shorties from another universe right? Don't worry I won't tell. ☺ Even though I will be missing more Squats. Love seeing your updates.

Anyway you know I love your work. Always a pleasure to look at. Can't wait to see the converted heavy weapon guys.
As for the transport I have a few queries/comments.
Is it done? Gonna add more before paint?
On the dorsal fin, the 2 little rods below the disc? What is they?
The engine/landing gear. Makes me think of ST shuttle nacels/ landing gear. Makes me think they should lay flatter on the ground. That make sense?

Cheers :)

The shuttle is done... no more building. just paint.

I have deliberately kept it plain so that it harks back to early cinema where the spacecraft were, to be honest, a little bit basic/rustic. The nacelles are at that particular angle to have thrust in both a downward/upward and sidewards plane for hovering and steering. The forward and backwards thrust comes from the hull mounted energy plates. The landing gear is retracted behind invisible doors underneath the main hull and would look like car aerials with dinner plates if they were extended down. The rods in the pylon are purely for style... they have no purpose at all.

The razors were just glued with standard polystyrene cement.

Pretty sure they're made of ABS, the S being styrene. Cyano would work fine, but so should regular 'plastic' glue.

As it did for Inso.  ;)

I love the look of the handles, and want to make many tiny space- and VSF flying- ships, but that stuff is darn hard to cut!

My ones seemed to be standard polystyrene and cut fairly easily with a razor saw (just as other plastic kits would).

For 99p for 10, it was a proper bargain too (and for that price, if you mess a couple up while cutting, you haven't broken the bank :) ).

Hmm, I'll have to take another look at mine. I can cut them ok with my razor saw but they seem to repel any type of glue other than superglue (I've tried Revell Contacta and Humbrol liquid polly, plus Plastic Weld).

What colours are you planning on using on the shuttle? Similar to the Sharclon you already painted?

Could be I'm just clumsy, or unused to cutting anything as thick.  ::)

You're getting a bargain compared to what I pay: 5 for $1. Of course, we're talking the difference of a quarter...  lol

...

Surprises me; I'd ask if you washed/degreased, but mould release might have stymied the cyano as well. I won't say it's a STRONG bond, but doesn't simply slough off.

While I've always had good results glueing ABS with cyanoacrylate glue, the "welding" types used for polystyrene didn't work satisfactorily for me (notably, Warzone and Starship Troopers miniatures).

On a related note, I've found that a lot of items here in Europe which used to be available in ABS (such as plastic dishes and bowls, or toothbrush handles) nowadays seem to be only made from "hard" PP (polypropylene) instead which is a nigh on impossible to glue and paint without bespoke specialist products.  :?

Has taken the impetus out of various modelling projects, I can tell you.

I have a selection of un-helmeted heads ready for a few characters (I have another 15 troops including 4 officers).

I wanted to keep the force fairly broad minded so I haven't used any of the bare heads yet. I have a few conversions planned and maybe... dare I say it... an evil queen to rule/lead them all!?

It's all in the air at the moment because I don't want to go too far with this little army... keep it fairly small (less than 50 troops/vehicles).
