Thanks all.
Up to now all of my photos were only slightly improved (size, brightness and cropped) with Photoscape, an internet graphics editor you can download for free. It is easy to use and does a good job.
I bought Photoshop Elements 11 cheap on ebay a few weeks ago and (after watching a load of youtube tutorials) these "Deep in the northern woods" photos  were the first i have used it on. No tricks yet (lots to learn) but controlling light and shadow with it is definately improving my pictures.
Still a long way to go before i am where i want to be but happy with the result.
When it comes to taking photos our hobby is still trailing behind compared to the photos from some other hobbys e.g.

You've done another series of WONDERFUL narrative photos. Telling stories with scenery & miniatures is something I try to do & admire when other succeed at it. VERY WELL DONE!
I'm rooting for the Trolls in this encounter.

The fae queen seeking council from the oldest and his troll companion.

The queen is a 1/32 Galadrial figure from a magazine collectors series repainted by me.
The troll is a hard plastic miniature from the "Blood Rage" board game.
Squirrel cavalry are from Eureka miniatures "Fanticide" range.
Effects done with Photoshop Elelments 11.

Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Like Brian Froud or Larry MacDougall paintings rendered in 3D!

Very nice.

For feedback the light effects in the first photo look a little artificial as they're the same brightness, similar distance apart, the same thickness and don't appear to go all the way to the ground. Still stunning, the bottom two are perfect (the first one is just almost perfect :P), better than anything I could do.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I thought the same. Although i was happy with the result, the longer i looked at it the more the rays of light disturbed me. I have modified them now. Is that better?

Thanks for the kind words all.
For those of you who might be interested, here is the "behind the scenes" for the Fae Forest photos.
The background is just a picture i found online, printed out on four A4 pages and stuck them together on some card.
