Train Robbery - ACW Skirmish
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:04:03 AM »
Hi!

We've recently had another game of Terrible Sharp Sword and I was looking for an excuse to put my new train set on the table - so I made up a scenario featuring a Rebel ambush on a Union train.

For more images and a detailed AAR, visit https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/2016/01/08/train-robbery-acw-aar/

Cheers!

That is cute - always good to see a train and for ACW it is a must. Anyone doing ACW in 20mm could use the toy story Hornby train as its great for Old West.

Nice - and timely, I have my Old West Peter Pig trains (yes, trains) on the work table as I type.  Is the mortar car in the ACW range?  Or is that a bit of a modification you've done.  That engine is blue!

Thanks guys!

juergen: That's very cool, and I never saw that movie, thanks for the hint - I'll check it out!

FifteensAway: The mortar car is scratch built; I bought some TT gauge axles and made the car out of balsa wood and match sticks. The mortar is from QRF/Freikorps 15, who have an incredible range of ACW artillery. The car is based on this one:

My model was actually a test piece for building a genuine railway gun, but I haven't started yet...

The colour of the engine is based on a drawing in the Osprey on American Civil War Railroad Tactics - engines were painted in quite garish colours at the time. I could barely resist painting mine red and putting 'Hogwarts Express' on the signs  :P

I've been following your thread over in the Old West forum - do you know of a European distributor for the Glencoe kits? Postage is absurd if i order from the US…

Cheers

Great report and nice work on the mortar car.

Bill, I believe Jurgen is referring to the 1956 movie, 'The Great Locomotive Chase'.

Shandy,

I'm afraid I don't know of a European distributor for Glencoe.  However, they are very cheap models and international postage rates are a part of our new reality so you just have to decide how badly you want these locomotives.  They are in TT scale, which is 1:120 which is about the size of smaller 15 mm figures - and work well in a size match to the Peter Pig locomotive which is pretty big next PP figures and still workable with Blue Moon figures which are much larger.  And, remember, you get two to a box - however, also remember that you don't get tenders except for the ones normally attached to the 'tank' locomotives so you'll have to find a way to build or substitute those.  I don't think that will be a challenge for you.

Go forth and conquer - your postage rate fees!

I built a model of a large caliber ACW gun on a rail car (28mm) and used it in a skirmish game.
See http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=49453.msg578547#msg578547
The shield on the gun car is built of rails.  The flat car is scratch built to fit on S gauge tracks.  The rest of the train is from Dixon, but the cars are refitted with commercial S gauge trucks. The gun is from the Huston Guns now marketed through Old Glory.

Very nice model (and sounds like a fun game)! This is the type of railway gun I plan to make...
