Chain of Command: Abyssinia - first game pics
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:26:59 AM »
Had our first game of CoC: Abyssinia last night at Lenton Gamers.  Many thanks to Rolf and Jim for the lists - we had an excellent game.  The scenario was an attack on an objective, a platoon of Eritrean askaris attempting to take out an Ethiopian chief in his stronghold on top of an amba.

I'll add some captions as I get time, and I think there will be a Scrivsland report to follow...

Both Ethiopian half-platoons deployed on phase one to soak up the Italian fire, which was just as well, as the 65/47 gun went into action straight away. A lucky shot from the Ethiopians killed the gun officer, but the gun was never silenced.

Ethiopian riflemen rush to defend the left side of the amba. The two tribal sub-leaders (one of whom can be seen right, with sword) were of quite limited use during the game - as Rolf and Jim have rated them as 'inferior senior leaders ', they only activate on a dice roll of 4. This meant that the Ethiopians actually had no junior leaders at all, so throwing threes was generally uselessl. Mildly frustrating, but a nice way to represent a poorer command structure.

Very cool looking set up there James. Great pics and quite evocative...great shot of the artillery pouring fire on...vultures at the ready for their spoils!

Shall look forward to the details on Scrivsland.

Top stuff to see your Ethiopians back at it  ;)

Nice one   :D

I can only echo Rolf's comments and say I do feel quite chuffed when somebody makes use of our scribblings.
 :D

That aside, great-looking game as always and glad you enjoyed it!  :)

Love the photos.
Do the vultures add a plus 1 to morale? ;D
Look forward to reading the AAR.

Lovely game - all the little added setting details like the civilians and and vignettes are wonderful!

Thanks!  I'd forgotten just how many extras I'd collected for this period until I opened the boxes last night.

The vultures were supposed to intimidate the Eritreans; both units had terrible dice rolls (two ones) which prevented them from scaling the amba on the first turn.  To be honest, having paid £5 for two vultures (and a carcass) from Foundry, I am keen to get my money's worth by squeezing them into as many pics as possible!  ;)

The structure of the CoC lists is always a pleasure to play - you get a core platoon, and can then add a few supports, rather than some systems which let you pick and choose virtually anything you like.  The amount of work that Rolf and Jim have put into these is evident (I've seen many published army lists with significantly less effort), so the fact that they are available free of charge is even more impressive.

Despite the WW1 project I am trying to complete, I'll be doing another game of Abyssinia in a couple of weeks.  We may even give the vehicle rules a go...

I love the pictures and can not wait for an AAR.
