Big Big Zeppelin
« on: December 03, 2008, 01:52:57 AM »
Hello all,

I have come to VSF via WWI where I have been dogfighting lately.
I built a big Zeppelin for our local wargame club open day.

You can check out some pictures here:

http://www.nwa.org.au/events/080809games08/backroom/g08backroom.html

There is also some great pictures on the Fredricksburg ACW game held on the same day.  hmmm now just need to convince them to add a steam tank or two :)

Our club is the Nunawading wargames association in Melbourne.

cheers
Neil
Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Thanks!

Its basic construction is foamboard and card with wooden dowel rods for internal support. The gondolas are made from Balsa wood and styrene sheet and brass tubing for struts etc.

I have put up a heap of in process shots on the Canvas Eagles Yahoo site if you want to see more (in the photos section).

I was building this for the club Open day and as the big day approached I realised that I had made the zep too short (it looked like a bomb not a zeppelin) so I had to make the agonising decision to cut the thing in half and extend it.

This caused a couple of tense moments but it came together well in the end. I'm planning on using the same technique to make a smaller zep for VSF gaming. Filled with zeelium of course  ;)

cheers
Neil

Thanks everyone for the great comments! Is that a zeppelin in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?  ;)

The zeppelin was pretty cheap to make being mainly card and foamboard. Probably just under $100 Australian not including my time. Its about 4ft long. Just the right size for 1/72nd scale WWI planes. Not too small that it looks silly but not too big so it could actually fit on the gaming table.

I originally planned to have it set up in the centre of the table with the planes (which could travel a lot faster) zooming around but in the end I had the zep move along the table. it was fun watching players having to make hasty movement changes to avoid colliding with it!

Oh by the way, how do you put pictures in your posts?

Cheers
Neil

Very nice. As for putting pictures in your post, get a host like Photoshop which will give you the url link and you use the button and insert the copied url between the two url tags there. Hope that was clear enough.
