Running question
« on: January 12, 2016, 12:05:27 PM »
Can you declare that a figure is running even if it doesn't move the extra 3"?

For example, my Cultist armed with a club moves 5" to get into base contact with another figure armed with a revolver. Could I declare that my Cultist ran that distance and so be -3 to hit when my opponent tries to shoot my Cultist before my Cultist gets his fighting attack?

I think you can 'run' any distance.
He's forgoing his shooting (not that he had any) to make himself a harder target.

I would agree...a figure can zigzag if he wants...except for when the figure moves into contact as he will then be  'in a fight' and the rules for shooting into a group (p.13-14) or shooting in a fight (p.14) would then apply which already give penalties to the shot (-4 in the case of shooting into a fight or deducting Speed in the case of shooting a revolver whilst in a fight).

Wouldn't the fact the Cultist had run apply a penalty in addition to his Speed (if the Cultist had any)? The example under shooting while in a fight has Captain Napier still suffering a penalty of four because he moved. So doesn't this mean all normal shooting penalties apply even when shooting in a fight.

My Cultists certainly hope so - they don't last that long in my games as it is!

Hmmm. Good point. I'm not sure now. I  must admit we've never applied the penalty for shots against running (or moving up to 6" for that matter) figures if that figure has charged into hand-to-hand....just the penalties for shooting in a fight or shooting into a fight.

In the example you mention Captain Napier gets a -4 penalty to his shooting because he moved so it could follow that his opponent in that same fight would get an additional -3 penalty to his attempt to shoot Captain Napier in addition to deducting Captain Napier's Speed. In that case, I guess it would also apply if another one of Captain Napier's adversaries were to shoot into the fight from a distance. That would mean a -3 Penalty to his shot because Capt Napier ran as well as the -4 penalty to his shot because it is a shot into a fight/group. Quite a penalty!

Perhaps Mr Cartmell will come along and give a definitive answer...

Take the highest accumulated penalties.

Less shooting and more knuckles and steel.

It's the more GentleMANLY way of the two methods for resolving matters...
"Nothin's there..." means something's hiding.
