I thought they were not uniform at all, in fact one of the very few clans to actually have a uniform was the Ii Clan??? I have noted so many people painting units this way and was under the assumption that this was correct until I read the Samurai archive information.

Which is correct?  o_o

Are we talking clothing or armour here? Clothing was supplied by the individual so it would be varied. Armour while provided by the Lord, was also varied...except in the Li Clan, and possibly others. The Samurai Archives chaps really know their stuff so it's very likely they are spot on!

Ahh ok so they were separate. I thought some of the under clothing would be different but there seemed little difference in what was worn from the miniature to miniature. OK many thanks for all the information, I do like to get these things right. I will not repaint the ones I have done so far (Which is not a lot) and will take everyone's comments and make adjustments on my next ones to paint.

Thank you very much guys.  ;)

I made the same mistake when beginning Sengoku gaming, but it's Ii, not Li. Japanese has no l sound.

The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Presumably, though, ashigaru clothing might have been less obviously varied or colourful, simple because of what was affordable, and given any local traditions.
