Skirmish game/light RPG?
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:11:01 PM »
This might be a dumb question but has anyone modified Strange Aeons to be sort of a light RPG? I have an idea or two how it could be done I think. But I would like to see if this has already been done or if there's a book that covers this. I'm thinking it could be like Xcom: Enemy unknown. Each player could be the leader of a shadowy organization fighting monsters. It could involve building a base (organizing shapes on graph paper for max efficientcy like Tetris?), some story between missions depending on Choose Your Own Adventure style choices and how well you do in missions. Just few ideas, but have any of you guys done this? How?

Sir- the game itself is already more than 90% of the way there.

The way my group plays it- we basically use that pitch- and there is a Villain mechanic called Nemisis that does a nice job of thing together games as your group gains enough renown.

There is no "base building" or "pandemic board" element- but it would be right easy to do and I am currently modeling up elements to post some narrative gaming. There has been serious talk on this forum several times in older posts about creating narrative books.

The game itself plays simple enough- I would encourage you to try it out/experiment with painting some models.

For most of my 1st edition days, and all throughout the testing of 2nd edition I was doing write-ups chronicling the adventures of my Threshold list. It's not quite what you were asking, but Strange Aeons does provide a good framework for spinning a good yarn!

They're all here, but you'll have to do a little sifting through for just the game report stuff.

Hmmm...  I thought it already was a light RPG/Skirmish game.  I suspect it is all in how you define it.

In my games, I put the role of "DM" on the Lurker.  I would hope they would play-off of the Threshold player and their feedback.

I think it just works very well that way.  It seems a simple matter to come up with a few plots/twists/branches in such a "light RPG/Skirmish game" as Strange Aeons.   ;)
