As standard, just one other soldier. However, the Leadership Trick of the Trade allows that number to be raised to three.

Do the captain count in the warband limit? Is he just an improved soldier or on par with the wizard/apprentice

Yes, he takes up a slot in the warband as any other model.

In terms of strength, he's somewhere between the Wizard/Apprentice and the Soldiers, depending on how you use him and what equipment/stat increases/Tricks of the Trade you take.

To my understanding, if he has the Leadership Trick, he can only activate three soldiers once per game.

Correct - I should have specified. He can activate one other soldier every turn, but can activate up to three ONCE per game.

Cheers!

The wizard & apprentice count towards the warband limit. If you decided not to take an apprentice you could take an extra soldier.

How much of a game changer is the Captain going to give players? I'm new to the game, but I really like the idea of getting one :)

Having a Captain in your war band means you have to pay him each turn (from your treasure) to stay in your Warband. The better he gets, the more he costs you. Captains can be created in a variety of ways to suit your style of play, more shoot, more fight, more tactical, and his skills that he develops (by spending experience) can only be used once per game, so you have to think carefully about when and where you use his abilities.

Also the Captain advances just like the Wizard, by getting XP or by spending gold, so you're effectively increasing the Captain at the expense of the Wizard. (The more gold you spend on the Captain, the less gold available to purchase increases for your Wizard.) I can see where there are situations where the Captain could be a game winner if you had the right choice of skills and used them at the right place at the right time, but then so could a Wizard. It's all down to your style of play.

I think he adds another dimension and more flavour to the game and doesn't unbalance it. Well worth buying the rules.

The next time I reset I plan to have a captain right from the beginning.

Wizard
Apprentice 200GC
Captain 115gc (Mail,Crossbow,TH Sword) Taking +1 Shoot and both shooting tricks
Crossbowman 50GC
Thief x4 80gc
Thug x2 40gc

15GC to spare (might get daggers for the wiz and apprentice for another 10gc)

This gives me max hands on deck for my first game. Everyone except the Captain, Wiz and App is expendable.
Allows a major +6 Shoot attack once per game with the +2 damage for x-bow from the Captain. With the Thugs the Captain can take the center field of the engagement and really do some damage. Depending on what kind of wizard I take I can do magic artillery support or buff the captian. This gives me lots of options. You only pay the captian 10-20% of what you take/sell. That means if you have a bad game he costs next to nothing to maintain...possibly nothing if you do really bad. If you do really well you can afford to give him 200gc if you just made off with 1000gc lol.

Another question (as I don't have the rules yet):

Is it possible to add a captain to a experienced warband (i.e. one already being used) or only to a new warband?
For example, my level 10 warband - can I add a captain to it, and it so, does he have any experience to start, or does he start accumulating it from there onwards?

You can add him and he allways starts with 0 Experience. :-)
