What rule options for 1 vs Many games?
« on: January 27, 2016, 12:00:18 AM »
Any suggestions on rules for playing games with 1 or 2 single characters against multiple/horde enemies?

Similar to FPS video games. I am aware of Frag from a few years back, but wondering if there is anything produced more recently.

I'd imagine this would be the easiest  type of game to develop quickly yourself.  You looking for a particular style horde engagement, or more James Bond vs. a dozen villains on his way to the objective?

Thinking of trying to run games like Gears of War or Halo on tabletop, but not as small forces on both sides, strictly 1 or maybe 2 hero models vs hordes of enemy.

Could be hero players vs GM controlled targets but better if system can have players with vastly different numbers of troops on the 2 sides.

You could go for Project: Elite, which is exactly what you're describing. Just replace the miniatures with good ones. The standard ones are okay for a board game, but if you care about miniatures they suck hard. But swap them for Tyrannids and some cool heroes and BAM! Done!
The game is really, really cool IMO. It's total madness, chaos, fun, intense and very original.

The Project Elite rules are available in pdf form from their store - link

The game itself is just under 100 euros, so it's definitely cheaper to test using the pdf first  ;D

I'd suggest THW's Star Army and the new free updated mechanics in Chain Reaction 2015.
Give special attributes to your hero and his grunts and set them loose against hordes of various enemies controlled by the game.

Thanks for the ideas. Have downloaded the Project Elite rules.....but admit a turn timer is never going to work with our gaming group so that would have to go straight off.

2hw series looks to be squad based rather than a single figure for a player and a $20 pdf is too pricey just to scan through as a concept.

Anyone know if there is a single figure/rpg version of FUBAR?

The basic chain reaction rules are free on the website - link. I too tend to find $20 for a pdf is when I start to look elsewhere :-[

I'm reading Skirmish Outbreak at the moment. They're zombie as opposed to SF, but the points system lets you build a single character if you want. How long they survive is another matter :) The pdf is $15.

Not sure if you've already ruled out "Tomorrow's War," personally, I found the rules to be horribly inaccessible, but from what I do remember this sort of thing would be represented well.

Everything was based around the concept that rolling a 4+ = success, and what differentiated troops was the number and type of dice they were rolling. So, while a weaker, inexperienced, or poorly trained model might only roll one or two d6's, veterans could be throwing d12's.

So give your heroes some armor, training, and high-tech weaponry and keep the hordes of enemies relatively "green" and that may work.

A note: from memory, there are no point values, it's heavily scenario-driven.  I think that actually lends itself well to a FPS-style game, but generating balanced forces may take some tinkering.
