[COMMERCIAL] New Female Knight from Bad Squiddo Games
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:11:28 PM »
Hello!

I had this made with Wars of the Roses in mind, but aware that she'll probably end up in a load of fantasy places.

I like the idea of her as alternate history. So we are aware that Game of Thrones is heavily inspired by WoTR, but to then take an element of that, and flip back. So Brienne of Tarth is a bodyguard to Catelyn Stark, but how about if Margaret of Anjou had her own female bodyguard? Ok she didn't, but it would be a cool story nonetheless.

Sculpted by Mark Evans and painted by Paul Cubbin.

If you wanted to have her leading more female knights, I also have just released some heads. These are made to fit most plastic box sets, so you can put them on some Perry foot knight bodies to add bulk (as the lack of female plastics is obvious, but at least you can easily switch heads and voila. They wouldn't have boob plate now would they)

All available here http://thedicebaglady.net/bad-squiddo-games-miniatures/

Cheers, and thanks for reading

At the risk of sounding harsh, she looks like a man with medium length hair.  I don't mind female miniatures dressed more appropriately and realistically for battle, but I prefer her head/face feature to be more feminine.  For example, an Eowyn metal miniature from GW Lord of the Rings line was depicted with armour, but still identifiable as female -- a good balance between tough armour and gentle femininity.

I'm sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear, but that is just my opinion and preference.

I think it's great. It might not be unfair to say that, if clad in a full suit of armour, many a woman might look a bit manish. Not every female face has to be a dainty and femininely beautiful, as indeed many aren't in real life. Even if you put aside the silly skimpy outfits that lady warriors are often depicted in, another issue is that usually they're all stunningly beautiful as well in many a piece of fantasy art, etc. It's refreshing to see a face that'd actually look menacing when angry, rather than a petulant teenage-queen whose been dressed up in (usually not much) armour.

I've been looking for a Paladin figure for Otherworld. This might be it. Sorry Annie, I've inevitably gone fantasy with her! But then I have no War of the Roses project! :)

She looks great Annie and those separate heads will be really handy for converting. You're right about armoured figures being ideal for converting to female fighters, as the body shape is disguised by the armour, in the same way as the Frostgrave plastics with all their wintry layers work so well converted to female. Thanks for sharing

She looks great!

I disagree with DCallan and agree with Gibby. She looks like a woman in armour. Doesn't have to be a stunningly beautiful woman in armour! I'm sure if such a woman fighter was busy fighting in full plate, and took her helmet off for a breath of fresh air, all sweaty and worn out, she wouldn't exactly be the traditional representation of delicate femininity! And could easily be mistaken for a man from a casual glance.

I understand exactly what you are trying to achieve with these models, and I think you have definitely achieved it with this one!

I'd go either way, if you want a bodyguard a woman still has to look imposing (and be able) and indeed there are (and almost certainly were) some imposing looking women around.

Miss Average would probably measure in the same ballpark as a 17-18 year old 'squire' (the fighting sort) or French-style 'archer' and to all intents and purposes could almost certainly be able to pass herself off as either. Bearing in mind that most Gendarmes were also in their early to mid-twenties, a few might blend in with them too.

Certainly two of the heads might be worth utilising as young males, as hairstyles in the Late 15th Century tended to be long (while fashionable women shaved their hair back to create a long forehead)... a woman passing herself off as male wouldn't have much trouble blending in though.

Nice figure and nice armour. I think I might replace the sword or file it down a touch, but other than that it works.  :)

Muscle structure changes the shape of the face. I have deliberately aimed for quite chiseled features on the women, assuming that if they're adventurers, they're going to be fairly well muscled. Having said that, I did say to Annie that I need to learn how to paint a 'softer' and more feminine face because the shades and highlights need to be different I think.

Short answer, you paint them differently and you'll get a different look.

Yes Annie, what were you thinking of. Posting a picture of a female a Knight in the medieval section. If your not careful someone may even use her as a Joan of Arc proxy and that wouldn't do at all.

Well she's not green or a pixie, hasn't got enough spikes and I'd probably find a use for her in my historical-ish forces.. if it had gone in Fantasy I wouldn't know it exists.

Besides there are more than a few 'historicals' that are far more fantasy than fact, so let's not be too pedantic.  ;)

Biggest problem seems to be the way she is holding her shield and especially sword. Does not look like a Joan of Arc, to me, but fine perhaps for a fantasy setting - but even then better looking armoured females are available. The heads are perhaps more interesting and useful for that matter.

She can be painted to be beautiful too, me and Cubs like 'em to look more battle ready but they can be made softer too.

I posted in here, as I stated above, she was actually made with Medieval in mind. However, this was one of the ones where I let the sculptor have free reign, so yes it may not be 100% historically accurate, it was more a whim "let's do a knight!". But posting here introduce you to her, and I will in the future be making heavily researched figures based on women from history. The main purpose of my project is historical, but with some fantasy bits thrown in occasionally, or even better, models which are made for historical, but can be picked up by the fantasy market too.  She doesn't have knee spikes, a skull shield etc  ;)

Games like Lion Rampant floating about at the moment would be great for her, but in general, to find a female knight in proper armour is hard, so I figured it would be better in here than Fantasy as they have way more choices (things with boob armour, skull helmets etc).

All of my figures so far have had a lot of comments on the faces, which I find strange, as I've never seen a male figure commented on his level of attractiveness. As Charlie and Gibby said, even when women are shown in proper armour in artwork, they are 99% of the time stunning catalogue models.
