Fixing broken X - Wing models, glue question
« on: February 16, 2016, 09:25:36 AM »
I've just bought a broken X - Wing miniatures model (Tie Interceptor) with a 'detached' wing. It hasn't arrived yet so I'm not sure of the extent of the damage but, assuming it's a clean clear break, what glue should I use to repair it. I'm never quite sure about plastics these days. I have polystyrene cement, Araldite and good quality super glue.

Thank you, in advance, for any advice.

James

Polystyrene cement works. I used it to convert a YT-1300 frighter, but I recommend superglue, because the link between "wing" and body of the TIE models is rather tiny and needs a stiff and solid connection. You could even try to pin it.

The plastic of the X-Wing minis melts like normal with standard polystyrene glue (I use Revell Contacta), so when allowed to properly melt and dry, it should be sufficiently strong to keep the wings on. they're not heavy at all, and there's no real tension, pressure or weight on the wings either, so it'll do.

I once snapped off the wings of a TIE Advanced because I wanted to convert it into a TIE Avenger. However, the shape of the hull would require so much work, I decided that it might be easier to just scratchbuild the thing, and I easily glued the wing panels back on with said glue.

That particular TIE has seen many dogfights since then, but it's as strong as ever...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...
