Low-budget Ion Cannon
« on: February 24, 2016, 12:37:39 AM »
I haven't posted here in a while but the 15mm SF Facebook group liked this project of mine so here goes:

I started with a Christmas ornament craft ball and a beer:

Trimmed down the can:

Added some bitz and cardstock details:

Ta da!

Figures are 15 mm scale so it's not huge, but in theory you can make something like this as big as you can find a sphere for.  I'm not sure how big the "Empire Strikes Back" one was, but I think big...

Great little scratch build. Might have to do one myself. Although I do have the old Kenner one from their Star wars sets for 28mm.

Chorus line: Brilliant! 8)

A really well thought out and executed idea; you probably 'saw' the shape in your head before you started. I'm sure this will be filed for future reference by many ;)

And the way you built it, it's pretty much scale neutral, so it could be used with anything from 6mm to 28mm I'd say...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks :)  I didn't want to bore everyone with pics of every time I glued on a bit.  There were no design drawings or anything, I really just started cutting card and grabbing bitz and went with it.  WYSIWYG and if you make one it'll look different.

.. and hopefully once I get around to painting it it won't look lousy.

Well done. I am totally swiping this for my 6mm Battle on Hoth.

Scale wise, this would be suitable.  Mine is around 65mm/2.5" in diameter which is at least ballpark for 6mm.
