Dystopian Wars basing
« on: March 06, 2016, 09:54:30 AM »
Recently purchased a pile of Spartan Dystopian Wars - some land sea and air

Not sure what the best approach for basing is - They come with clear plastic bases

My mounting dilemma is:-

Land - Do I mount them just on the clear base and let the terrain below show through or do I flock the bases:
Sea - Likewise do I just use the clear bases or make them sea scape -I do have semi submerged Metzger robots which have textured bases instead
Air - Intend to just use the clear bases

Any recommendations and suggestions very welcome

Thanks

Gabbi

Well, it seems your only doubt is about naval models. Usually they don't have a base at all, bar the submarines and s few others (the aforementioned Metzger). If you want bases under all your models, I think clear ones will look just fine, while sculpting waves on every ship's base would prove to be more consistent.
This said, I've left all my ship un-based, mainly for gaming purposes.
In this regard, if you plan to play with your models, you should be aware that rules-wise if a model comes with a base measurements are made from the base, if the models comes without a base (usually ships) measurements are made from the model itself (and in different ways depending on what you're measuring for. For example, iirc, turret fire is measured from the turret itself, generators effects are measured from center of the ship, broadsides in a further different way, and so on...). So while you can indeed mount ships on bases, you should then remember which model should have measurements made from the base and which ones don't.

Thanks Gabbi

I hadn't spotted that there were no bases for the boats as yet.

Still undecided with respect to the land forces

I'd flock the bases, but that's purely a personal choice. I only leave some of my naval figures on clear bases as my se mat is flat and there's nothing to scratch the underside. But really,it would take some time for that to happen unless you have a table with sand glued to the surface, etc.

I've found basing the ships is a positive hindrance as it means you can't bring your ships close in to each other, making moves like this difficult..

I also found that turning and curving close to shores is more difficult with bases. If the ship is not scratched, it may move close to the shore, but the base is still in the way.

So, do not base ships, base pure-land-forces with flock. Use clear-bases when added. Use bases for ships only for the more display matters.

Thanks to everyone - That's really helpful

Hoping to do a few for the LPL but the painting is going slower than I hoped
