Lasers Rampant (for kicks!)
« on: March 14, 2016, 12:58:51 AM »
Well I wrote these up the other night on a whim.  Probably broken and wrong, but it was fun and I'm using them to encourage me to paint up more space marines!  Feel free to critique and point out terrible oversights if you wish.

I broke down the Dragon Rampant units to come up with a simple mathematical formula.  In general units are more expensive points-wise simply due to having most both shooting/melee abilities.  A small 40K force would probably be 24-36 points minimum.  If anyone tries these out, let me know.

Took a look through it.  Looks very well done.  As best as I can figure it seems logical, but of course only a playtest will tell.

Have you tried them yourself yet?

Nope, just got bored one evening.

I just wanted to throw it out there so people could add/change/suggest stuff...make it a little community based project.  The stats are equivalent to most of the Dragon Rampant stuff with the obvious increase in shooting lethality.

Cover would be a bigger deal here, and I'd obviously like to add more science fiction attributes --- as it stands now it's more suitable for Space Marines, Imperial Guard and similar stuff, not so much Tyranids etc. (though I tried to add assault/tooth-and-claw stuff).  Once I finished typing it up though I immediately set to painting up more space marines to get a small group together to try it out.

You'll find 3+ shooting too deadly.

It is definitely deadly, but put there on purpose.  I wanted a "all conquering" powerful infantry unit to allow people to portray Space Marines from the fluff, etc.

It definitely pushes the need for cover (which adds +1 to a unit's Armor value).

Play test it and you will see.  Lion Rampant works so well because everything has a counter - Elite Foot hit on 3+ but have no ranged attack so can be whitled away with bow fire.  Elite Cavalry can't fight in rough ground.  A shooting 3+ is too much.  Against a normal troop they will usually kill 4 giving a rout test at 8+ so can destroy such a unit in one round of fire more often than not.

Could work if you want 'Movie Marines' going up against overwhelming numbers of cultists or 'Nids perhaps.  8)

For everything else, it might be better to go 4+, but as said; better to thoroughly playtest before making any decisions.

Great work and thanks for sharing!  :)

Looks good. Worth trying out. If the Elite Troopers are too good you could always increase the cost from 8pts to 10-12pts.

Is shooting still subject to -1 if over 12"?

Up to the players really.  I'd probably not use that rule, simply because the game is definitely more shooting than not.  Audrey, if you want to throw some 40K models down some time we can take a crack at it.  This was really just the result of being bored one night.  May be complete crap.  lol

This looks great!

On the 3+ shooting: if my erratic maths is correct, 3+ shooters would typically cause 8 hits per volley. That's the same (I think) as an Expert Light Missile unit with the Venomous upgrade (for shooting): 6 hits, of which 2 would typically be doubled, giving 8 in total.

We've used that DR profile for Medusa in several games, and it's always worked well: devastating without being unbalancing.

And the marines will still share the traditional vulnerability of Elite Foot: low numbers.

I think that the rules don't lend themselves super well to a unit which can both shoot and fight rather well, but it is what it is.  I think the Heavy Troopers are still the best (simply having 3 armour and a Strength of 12), much like foot sergeants from the normal game.  Add cover and that becomes Armor 4.

I should keep in mind that last time we played a game of Lion Rampant we used the house rule that units roll dice based on their Strength rather than 50% or less.  So a unit of 12 with two casualties only rolled 10 dice instead of the normal 12.  This helps a bit, but also makes it much harder to fend off stronger units when you become wounded (particularly armor 4).

There's also that great leveller, terrain. If the marines have a one- or two-point upgrade, they're costing the same as three units of Fierce/Bellicose Foot. Sure, they'll shoot them to smithereens if they get a clear shot, but it might just take a couple of charges out of cover to reduce them to so much power-armoured debris!

Yeah, heavy terrain use would help a lot.  Particularly if you take some infantry with the upgraded speed and convert them to assault (maybe tooth and claw only).  Allowing you field dangerous guys like genestealers and such.  Perhaps a specific entry for fast clawed beasties is in order.
