Shieldwall Rampant - Link to rules added
« on: March 14, 2016, 02:17:49 AM »
Had a game yesterday at Nunawading Wargames Assoc. (in Melbourne) of Lion Rampant set in the Dark Ages which was dubbed Shieldwall Rampant.
Saxons v's Viking raiders somewhere in Northumbria, some time in the 9th century, something around about lunch time...

It was a great game with a couple of era-defining tweaks which were implemented, debated and changed throughout the course of two games. I've looked at the semi-official Dark Ages article in WI by the author but I feel these are more in line with his Dux Bellorum rules and don't quite fit with brutal Viking adventure. More work on easy to implement tweakage is required.

Anyhow, here's a couple of pictures with more pics and a battle report on my blog: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Excellent! I've been using LR for Dark Age battles too, I'm interested in what tweaks you blokes have applied to the ruleset.

All hail the polystyrene Henge!  lol

Any other mods to LR besides upgrading Shiltron to more defensive Shieldwall?

For those who may be interested the Shieldwall Rampant rule adaptions (For Lion Rampant) that we at NWA will be using for the upcoming International Viking Day at this weekend's meeting are available for download on my blog @ http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/ (pdf).

If you happen to look at them I'd appreciate any feedback. They are pretty simple and don't deviate from the core rules much but I believe they give a decent Dark Age feel.

I like the idea of having to chose if your shieldwall will defend against missiles or combat. I will certainly give that a try. And I like the hurled weapons to.

Have you guys tried hitting on 5's with the hurled weapons, will that perhaps make them too powerfull?

Thanks. The shieldwall rule make you have to think and it also give you opponent something tactical to think about.

I think hitting on 6's is better because I didn't want to make it a truly offensive option. More of a defensive action you can take without breaking your defensive position. I took it straight out of descriptions of the Saxons at Hastings.
