15mm Afghan Wars....
« on: March 15, 2016, 12:56:16 AM »
Who makes the very best figures for this war in 15mm? I'm thinking of going munchkin scale for 'The Men Who Would Be kings'. I'm also wondering as to which shade of Vallejo paint would be best for the khaki uniforms.

???

Hey, hey, hey!  :o

Munchkins scale is 3mm or 6mm - my other sizes of miniatures.  I prefer the term "proper height" for 15mm.   ;)

Seriously
I don't know but will be fascinated to find the answer myself.  Since I have never researched a British colonial force, how much does the uniform differ from earlier?  What would show up in 15/18mm size as noticeable?

The "USA" web site has Irregular, QRF, Peter Pig, and Blue Moon to a similar question.

I am informed  that Eureka Miniatures and Old Glory have 15mm Afghan War miniatures. I know nada about them...

Edit - interesting source, no idea if it is current.

If Blue Moon does it, then Blue Moon is your source!  And you can supplement with Irregular who should match size-wise, maybe also Lancashire games if they have the period.  But Blue Moon will have the better sculpts.  And, without question, they will have the best variety - forget my miles, by continents.

Sorry should have made it clear, the figures sold by Old Glory UK are Bluemoon figures.

I tried this many many years ago and while the sense of scale of terrain and scenery are more easily recreated in 15mm, the choice of figures was reprehensible back in the day. It is much better served than it was but there is still a tendency to model the Brits at the expense of the native troops in British service, far more so than in 25/28mm.
Most of the smaller 'police actions' and 'butcher and bolt' scenarios were enforced by the North West Frontier force, who had a hybrid uniform including poshteens and other irregular stuff. Small patrol and garrison units of Indian troops, Sikhs, Rajputs and Bengalis, with a few Gurkhas...
You'd need to do your research and find or assemble a good mix of figures...

Okay, while Brits bore me, this caught my interest.  Might have to do some research.  Thanks!

Oddly enough I've found the Boxer Rebellion and China Wars 1900 period a good source for colonial forces for my 15mm 'Back of Beyond' Forces
If you don't mind fudging the detail a bit (and in 15mm who's to tell one rifle type from another quite frankly) you might try pushing the envelope and casting about for figure sources at the upper end of the C19...

Personally, I'd pick a campaign or scenario you'd like to play out, do the research for ORBATs and see if you can source the figures...

Who makes the very best figures for this war in 15mm?

I've done a similar search and decided on Blue Moon, even though the pics on their site make the minis look a light strange.

When I got them in my hands, I knew I had made the right decision. Great, paintable detail and they look great when they are done.

I've bought a boat load of their colonial miniatures. I think you would be very happy with these minis.

I've taken a gander at their site too and they even have dismounted guide cavalry... everything you need to wargame in 'The Grim'. I'd still splash out on a variety of tribesmen. Even their Ansar with rifles would do for Afghans to achieve the variety
Now all you need is the appropriate scenery... like the village photographed by Bob Shepherd

Another vote for Blue Moon with others for support where needed. I have a load of them for FIW and Wild West plus others. Very nice figs and as good a range of poses as you'll get from many 28mm metal ranges.

I am sort of thinking of doing this myself...
