Moldavian and Wallacian armies in the Crimean war ?
« on: March 11, 2016, 09:53:26 AM »
Hello,

I recall that Miniature Wargames  magazine did a series  about the Crimean war in the 1980s , and I think there was a mention of the armies or militias  of  Moldavia and Wallacia  which gave nominal allegiance to the Turkish Sultan.
Did they fight with the  Turks or side with the Russians ?

Hi,
the article is from MW 61 , June 1988, no longer have the issue  but did make some notes.
   Moldavian army-
Infantry- 1853 - dark blue  coatee, red collar, shoulder straps and cuff flaps.
In 1854 changed to dark blue tunic, same facings.
Trousers- 1853 , grey-blue with red stripe , in 1854 dark blue with red stripe.
Russian style helmet in black leather with brass spike/helmet plate oc ox head shape.
Greatcoat dark grey, black leather crossbelts until 1854 , then white French style shoulder belts and waist belt.
  Officers had gold belts.

Cavalry- dressed and equiped as lancers.
Blue jacket, black czapkas with red top section, red collar , cuffs and lapels (plastron across the chest)  and piping.
Dark blue trousers with 3 red stripes.
shoulder scales had white fringes. White belts. Lance pennants were checkered red and blue.

 Artillery-

Dark blue coatee, in 1854 changed to tunic, dark blue collar and cuffs piped crimson, crimson cuff slashes and shoulder straps.Trousers blue-grey or blue, black belts.
Black leather helmet, brass ball instead of spike, helmet plate of crossed cannons.

I'll have a look for the Wallachian army notes.

 Pete.

From that article it seems that the Russian advance into Moldavia was warmly received and later, Moldavian troops are mentioned as fighting with the Russians against the Turks (but only within the Balkan theatre).

The Wallachian Regular troops marched over to join the Turkish Army when the  Russian advance entered Wallachia.
However the Russians did raise/conscript a number of Wallachian Militia units who fought with them.
