List of good 28mm FIW figure manufacturers needed.
« on: March 25, 2016, 01:11:19 PM »
Hi guys,

I played four fantastic games of Muskets and Tomahawks last weekend and I want to get a purchase list together for a collection of my own.

I'm looking for high quality 28mm metal miniatures that would suit my [the 'Dallimore'] style of painting. I'm looking for everything including civilians, canoes, etc. Please could you give me some pointers as to where I should start my catalogue searches.

Thank you,

James

There tend to be two schools, large and small figures

Large

Redoubt enterprises have everything you would need. I would mix in with these Galloping major for variety, both cracking ranges

On smaller side warlord do a nice range, especially Indians. You can mix in the Indians from perry Awi and the odd figure too, together with foundry awi

I went for galloping major with a few of the northstar to mix and went off at a tangent and used foundry 7yw brits, not to everyones taste but very nice. For scots I went with redoubt which fit well too.

To add bits and bobs I would look at north starr, a little in between but some nice minis too

I went for Redoubt and Galloping Major- they are very big for 28mm scale and will not mix well with Perry/Warlord. They are nice figures although a few redoubt figures have nasty mould lines that can be a pain to get rid of. They also have civilians and cattle etc.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/

Galloping Major would be my first recommendation mostly everything covered especially Indians, rangers, Colonial militia, Provincials and French Canadian militia. They are due to release British regulars followed by their French counterparts soon.

Each figure is a real character and they paint up a treat. There are lots of photos in my gallery of our recent games, but also others have posted lots of pics of their figures recently.

If you are impatient Like me and couldn't wait for the regulars I went with Redoubt. As suggested already they are old moulds so the castings need some work. Their Franche de la Marines and Highlanders are lovely. They also have a great variety of civilians, wagons etc.

Galloping Major - he's in Driffield, so he's a local to us.

Another hand raised for Redoubt and Galloping Major. Like mentioned Redoubt sometimes requires extra clean up, but both are very painter friendly.

These are Kings Mountain Miniatures Over Mountain Men. The were sculpted to match Galloping Major and Redoubt and are available here:

http://kingsmtminis.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23_25&osCsid=89e3c1e6e4e06430889cf67b377d3c80

The figures come with separate heads and Trappers, Settlers, Militia, Couer Du Bois and Woodsman can all be portrayed using the 250 available heads.

In fact, Galloping Major is the European distributor for KMM. Here's a few pics of the OMM painted for F&I War duty.

If you want s list then we have a few more...

Northstar( Musket and Tomahawk), as mentioned above
Perry, AWI Indians and militia hat can be used for FIW
Warlord (conquest range), great sculpts)
Front Rank, a bit old dated but have a few nice ones
Foundry, see Front Rank comment for the Indians, then the SYW range is much better
Old Glory, not one of their best ranges though
West Wind have a bunch of nice civilians that are suitable
Crusader have some nice ones
Dixon, smallish but some nice characters
Brigade, some nice indians by Paul Hicks

The Northstar stuff is excellent, but it is a small range.
Galloping Major is very good, and an expanding range
Redoubt are variable (some odd poses and figure proportions), but have a huge range and include stuff like canoes.
Those are all compatible size-wise.
Front Rank are nice but slightly smaller than the above
Old Glory are variable, quite a bit smaller, and much cheaper.

I went with Redoubt and Galloping Major with a few Front Rank thrown in.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Galloping Major get's my vote, nicely sculpted with bags of character.
