Trent do a set of Russian Boyars (and a Tartar hetman) based on Bilibin illustrations. Six figures for only £7.50 from North Star.
One or two of them might be suitable, but perhaps a bit static in pose (but cheaper for 6 than a current GW single)

Crusader do a set of "Adventurers III - Rune Lords", again through Northstar. Four figures for only £7.50
They have a couple of reasonable types

Or how about Lead Adventure Miniatures? They have some glorious Renaissance figures
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

There are a few pieces in the Bruegelburg range that I would have thought would fit the bill nicely: http://www.lead-adventure.com/index.php?cPath=22&osCsid=c03f224124b00d82b3ceb466bf9a4c88

And there's also this nice c16th bishop that I think would make for a fairly simple conversion:

Try Stuff of Legend and then Ebay citadel produced loads of clerics and wizards in the 1980s and 90s .

Also http://blackchapelminiatures.com/en/altreich/40-alchemist.html

Ral Partha europe and other role playing and D&D ranges normally have robed figures which may be suitable.

Good hunting

Thanks for the tips everyone! Some pretty brilliant sculpts and a couple of companies I hadn't heard of before ;)

Somehow I'd completely forgotten about the Bruegelburg range. I have plenty of the VSF stuff and loved the style they have. Gotta order me some Bruegelburgers as well. Definitely could use a few of those.

And thanks to WillieB! Got a Mercator from him.

I have the third one in my post (furry hat and spyglass) if you're interested. Non-ridiculous price, unpainted and in Helsinki :D

I might have to take you on that offer then ;)
