North-West Frontier - any inspirational movies out there?
« on: April 16, 2016, 02:29:03 PM »
Looking for movie inspiration for colonial wars in Afghanistan/North West frontier. Beside "The Man who would be king" and a few scenes from "Young Winston". What else is to be found? Grateful for any advice!

And of course, North West Frontier starring Kenneth Moore. Great little movie. Set in 1905, but still some great action shots of tribesmen attacking a fortified town and various attacks on a train.

Seconded, a marvellous film. :)

Not a movie, but if you can find a copy of the 1984 TV mini-series, "The Far Pavilions," (adapted from the novel by the same name) it might be worth watching.

I guess it's officially a cross-cultural romance drama, but the hero is an Anglo-Indian officer in the Guides, the story is largely set against the backdrop of the Second Afghan War, and it includes a recreation of the Afghan Army mutiny and assault on the British embassy at the Bala Hissar, resulting in the massacre of the Guides escort.  It strikes me that it may in fact be the only movie or TV dramatisation of any portion of the Second Afghan War ever done.

"King of the Khyber Rifles", set more or less during the Indian Mutiny.  "Wee Willie Winkie", Shirley Temple and Caesar Romero.

It is still a rather inspiring film. The colonialist attitudes is however rather thinly concealed, which is a bit jarring.

It's a bit of a stretch to call it a Northwest Frontier movie, but "High Road to China" included a brief stopover in Afghanistan, with Brian Blessed as the Pathan chief.

I shouldn't suggest this one, either, but the Flashman movie (Royal Flash) has a 'flash'back (sorry) to Flash Harry's exploits in the 1st Anglo-Afghan War.  Not particularly inspiring  :'(
