Author Topic: I have questions about rules for 2, 3, and 6 mm miniatures?  (Read 1540 times)

Hi there, I'm looking for new rules to read (as I don't get much time to game, sob). But I don't really know what to look for and Google isn't much help, so I was hoping for some guidance or maybe just a linkdump.

The rules should...
  • be suitable for small scale, 2, 3, and 6 mm
  • concern at least platoon-size engagements, but - if possible - scale up to brigade-size
  • handle near-future up to star trek-ish future

Bonus if the rules can handle modern-day warfare!

I'd like to hear what rules you use for games in this scale, and if there are any that you can recommend.

The 6mm SF ones I have are Future War Commander and Dirtside II from GZG

I've played a couple of games of Dirtside, but had trouble fitting GW Space Marine Epic vehicles into the Dirtside size classes. Haven't got around to playing Future War Commander yet :(

How about Horizon Wars?

Brand new from Osprey, sound like it could be what you're looking for.

I got the impression from the demo games on YouTube (which I've been following with great interest) that Horizon Wars is played at a smaller scale, so maybe up to company level.

Of course, the game demo might have been played on a small scale to facilitate a half hour demo, but IIRC the designer said the game's been described as skirmish level and he didn't disagree.

Watching the demo it struck me that the game would probably work well (dare I say, even better?) in 15mm.

Talk about fast turnaround! Thanks, guys! :)

X War Commander does look good, but is at this point in time only available as POD from Lulu. PDF will be available sometime this year, so I'll wait for that.

Horizon Wars - I had the impression that this was a mecha game. But reading the ad blurb, and learning that this is an Osprey game, certainly put this one on my list.

LaserStorm - I'm a big fan of Nordic Weasel, so I can't explain how I missed this one. But I'm DL'ing it as we speak, so for now, this is my jam.

Thanks again. I value your opinions.

For some beer and pretzels fun, check out the free Panzer8 series of games.

The same basic rules engine adopted for a variety of eras and genres.
Designed for 2-6mm stuff, we played it a few times and enjoyed it enough to make some tweaks for our own 10mm forces.

Hi, chaps and chapettes!

Horizon wars was written with scales between 2mm and 10mm in mind.  Whether it works at 15mm really depends on the level of abstraction you like at that scale.  I personally think it's too abstract above 10mm, but the mechanics still work just fine because it's abstract.

I'm happy for it to be described as a "skirmish-style" game, because it functions element by element with alternating activations.  So if fulfills many classic skirmish game criteria.  It is optimised for platoon+ to company+ scale, but "optimised" means play time and some of the mission design criteria.  If you're happy playing your own missions and have the means to set aside three hours for a game, then there's no reason it wouldn't work perfectly well at Brigade level.  Army building might take a while, though.

R.
