SI,

It is a truly fantastic layout to go with your incredible customized plastic forces, and I envy you and all others who get the chance to game with your troops on that terrain!

As I believe you plan on gaming the retreat of some survivors from the defeat at Maiwand, I have a recommendation, which it's very possible you are already familiar with, but just in case you're not: I humbly suggest you get a copy of Colonel Mike Snook's, "INTO THE JAWS OF DEATH," and read the excellent chapter on the battle of Maiwand. It covers all aspects of the campaign in some detail, including the near fifty-mile retreat to Kandahar, and may inspire you with regard to your scenario.

One rather cinematic detail from the retreat is an artillery limber being pressed into service as an improvised ambulance to carry some of the more severely wounded, including Surgeon-Major Preston, who many say was part of the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's far more famous medical officer and Afghan War veteran, Dr. Watson.  Of course you already have more than enough pieces for an amazing game, but using your impressive talents to add a fugitive gun limber ferrying wounded couldn't hurt!

Again, amazing work on your part and I echo others above in thanking you for posting all the very useful WIP pics!

Thanks folks  :D  Your remarks are very much appreciated.

And yes Nick..... a game..... soon!

lol re plastic glue fumes.  If only that were true. They can be a bit irritating though nowhere near as obnoxious as superglue.  :o

Thanks MG for those extremely useful suggestions.  I don't know the book so I've added it to the 'the list'.  The artillery limber cum ambulance is also a great idea: i have most of the parts to cannibalise from the Perry ACW plastic artillery set but will probably cut it to two horses (the rest having been lost to action) to avoid the need for drivers (and save some tabletop space).  I already have RHA crew and a gun in  the 'to do' pile for other scenarios. Your reference to 'cinematic' is most apt, as that's exactly what I'm aiming for with this project (there being a certain amount of 'give' in the history etc to accommodate the story-telling   ;))  :D

Thanks again all  8)

Hi Steve

real life is preventing me from dwelling here on a daily basis but having seen the layout so far and the figures you have done a fantastic job !! It really is wonderful

Thanks Giles.  :)

I take it then, that that's what you did with your desert boards?

Yes my desert boards were done sand first - indeed I have just started on another set of cliff boards for the desert - realised I did not have enough corners

All the best ...

Thanks Giles. I know what you mean by corners, as I realised yesterday that I needed another cliff tile for my The North board. Hope you're able to visit more often in the New Year.  ;) :)

It seems a little daft to mention this now that photobucket has killed all the pictures, but I finally saw this set-up in the flesh today and it is truly a joy to behold.
Check out the plog if you have not already, you wont be disappointed, this truly is a lovely table.

Top job, Steve!

Top job, Steve!

Well thank you kindly Paul!  :D

Here are a couple of snapshots of the Afghan table as used for the Libya WW2 game. The only tile not used was the watchtower and the palms are added for a desert feel.

Here's a PLog link for the Afghan versions:
