What a transformation  :-* :-*

I agree with Dijit, there certainly is love for old school GW on here and seeing you do these makes me want to get out my old plastic guardsmen again  lol

cheers

I think a lot of the inspiration for me is not only nostalgia...but being a bit more skilled, and having the money to put together the kind of army I wished I'd had when I was 14.  To be able to put together cohesive units with a simple planned paint job etc.  I don't have any pictures of my old stuff, but needless to say it was the typical spastic-minded 14 year old collection.  I'm moving again in a few weeks so I'm trying to take advantage of the time to get figures painted up (my paint stuff will end up in a box for an undecided amount of time!).

Should be plenty more posted here in the next few weeks.

That is a good point, and to be honest, the sculpts of the time are rather good. Crisp and clean with minimal detail and decently proportioned for the most part.

I opened the cupboard that my guard are in and nearly took them out  lol

cheers

I agree...I'm quite shocked at how good many of the sculpts are.  They are definitely slight by comparison to modern stuff, but as Eldar I don't much mind.  The sculpts are so good that when GW designed new (terrible) Aspect warriors for a later edition, they then reverted and went back to the old "design" language from the RT/2nd edition figures.

If you look at the intermediate Fire Dragons, Striking Scorpions etc. they're an absolute blight on the miniature line.  The current resins are either straight from 2nd edition or they did new sculpts based on the old 2nd edition figures.   lol

Nice work saving these old classics.

Personally I've found it's almost never a good idea to dip the entire figure. Paint the bits that work with the dip - earth colors mostly - dip and then paint the rest.

Ofcourse, this means you can't use the urethane varnish dips. I like the Vallejo ones. Their light gray dip is perfect for whites.

These pics didn't come out that well - very dark armour.  Regardless, everyone loves/fears/hates Dark Reapers.  They're so expensive this'll probably be the sole squad.

Not the best results, but playable and I like the scheme in person (not nearly as dark as it looks!)

Don't worry, if they look good on the picture that means they look astonishing in person. Black is always tricky to paint, at least for me.

They're actually a very dark bronze, similar to the old GW colour "tin bitz".  I snapped a pic with my cell phone which shows the colours a bit more clearly:

oooh that's cool elbows I thought they looked nice (though black) in the first photo but the dark bronze is really nice and unique.

Thanks, it was a toss-up between that or dark blue (I think my original Dark Reapers twenty years ago were midnight blue).  I just really didn't want to do the usual black.

Well I knocked out the first group of guardians and scouts...with, sadly dip that had gone a bit south (even after adding thinner a week ago!).  I'm not overly chuffed with them, but they look fine at table height.

Purple headed warrior jokes are welcome.  lol

Thanks Jon,

I'm hoping to knock out a few more squads..maaaybe a character or two (I do the old "reward yourself with characters/vehicles after painting up a squad!" technique) in the near future.  I ordered a couple of warwalkers and wave serpents.  I should have a small 750-1000 pt. force with a character or two I'd think.

A move is coming up, so I'll be disappearing from the painting table for a bit...trying to get a starter force done.

Now I know why the Eldar scouts have hoods. To cover the purple helmet when hiding lol. Looks like the white dipped better on the guardians and I like the bone colored weapons.
