Indian Mutiny of 1857
« on: April 25, 2016, 11:44:30 AM »
Talking with a friend and fellow Wargamer who is interested in colonial wars and the subject of why we never did the above war came up.

My reply was he is a 25/28mm guy predominately and I am a 15/18mm guy predominately.  He said (paraphrased)  if you did a force in 15mm who would you choose and what manufacturers would you use.  Good question as I have never seriously looked into doing this war.

So, does anybody make figures for both sides of this war in 15/18mm?  I am perfectly willing to add this war (this is very exceptional that I even consider adding another era to my queue) to my evolving final painting/playing plans but only if I do this in something smaller than 20mm.  Since he is much younger than myself I feel comfortable that these armies would be able to passed on to him when I (hopefully at least a decade or more from now) pass on.

Please no posts on larger figures, these are simply not in my "acceptable options" list any more.

In 15s, look at Irregular Miniatures. There's a lot of very usable stuff in the Black Hat Sikh Wars Range as well.

Are you sure we can't tempt you with the new Iron Duke 28mm range? Shaping up to be THE definitive range for the period...

Simply, no.  Never.  No more larger figures that start new armies.  Fill a few holes in legacy armies this year and then nada.

Number one must be the Dixon range in 15 mm since they have the 'best' range for both sides.  You will then be visiting the Essex and QRF Mogul (and may be some other) ranges to get some additional variety.  Irregular have some useful figures but they are bigger.  Not familiar with the Lancashire range but I think they might be a little short and 'squatty' but I could be wrong.

No reason why "I" would say this, but you can't go wrong with 15 mm.  In 28 mm you'll need a gymnasium to do what we can do in the smaller scale.  No offense to the Steroidal Scale enthusiasts - or even their manufacturers!  lol

But, again, start with Dixon's range and see if you can get all you want there.  Depends on how big and how "wide" you go with your collection.  Just some of us - like me - go a little crazy in accumulating figures.

Whichever way you go, have fun.  And get a copy of Wargames Illustrated issue 48 for the list of uniforms - in text but a good resource at a fair price.

Some will charge you a lot for less information, sad reality of our hobby.  I don't mind people making a fair profit but it irks me that some people will take a small amount of information and then subdivide into even smaller parts for no other purpose than to gouge the hobbyist. (Now climbing down off my soap box.  >:()

For uniforms, the best guide at the moment is Mike Snook's notes on the Empress range......
