Sources for Medieval Spanish heraldry - circa 1450-1500
« on: 10 May 2016, 03:50:35 PM »
Hello Folks,

My brother and I are looking to put together some Lion Rampant retinues for Portuguese, Spanish and Grenadine forces for the late fifteenth century.

I've picked up the Osprey Armies of Castile and Aragon 1370 - 1516 but was wondering if anyone knows of any good sources (website or books) for heraldry for Spanish/Portugese nobles of this period, particularly focusing on those involved in the Castillian succession and the fall of Granada?

Cheers,

Here's something to get you started until other and better suggestions come:

And I'm interested how those Grenadines turn out  :)

I would recommend the Pastrana Tapestry for the look of Portuguese/ Spanish soldiery c 1480s - lots of details here worthy of closer examination.
There are some heraldic devices shown, but these may need checking to see if they're accurate or representative.

Thanks guys, some great stuff there. I knew LAF wouldn't let me down  :)

I'm taking on the Spanish using the Perry WOTR plastic sets whilst my brother is converting and kit-bashing the Granada forces from a combination of the Perry plastics, GB plastic Saracens and green-stuff. We figured the Portuguese could be done with the Perry WOTR stuff as well.

I know Iain will be lurking on here somewhere so I'll try and pressure him into finally joining and posting his creations. Only problem is they'll be better painted than mine  ;)

Thanks again for the assistance, please keep it coming.
