We have been discussing the Hungarian Revolution at my local club following a members trip to Hungary recently.

Is there a source book for covering the revolution in English ?

Hello Emir,

There are a number of books in English covering the Hungarian Up-Rising. If you are after a general book covering the affair then: ‘The Lawful Revolution – Louis Kossuth and the Hungarians 1848-49’, by Istvan Deak. I don't have the book personally, but it has been recommended.

For uniforms: Ralph Weaver’s book ‘The Hungarian Army 1848-1849’, published by Partisan Press.

There is in addition, a uniform book for the Hungarian War wrtitten by Barcy Zoltan and Somogyi Gyozo "A Szabadsagharc Hadserege or for a latter edition by Smogyi himself. Available through Amazon.

MWAN Magazines numbers 120 and 123 in PDF format from the Wargame Vault are an invaluable source which would suffice if you wish to look at the period. I recommend these two editions as a starting point. Bill Haggert rounds out the whole period in a lovely style of writing including illustrations of uniforms. You should use these as a reference point when using other references and marrying up uniform detail.

I found this book in a second hand book shop in Budapest.😀 Its in very good condition. It cost me 3000 HUF. I am happy to sell it to the first person to ask for the book. Cost 3000 HUF plus postage to your country. PM me if interested.

It’s one of the first I bought on this war.
I don’t know if it’s still available... but it’s a good basic source of information.

I think if you have done your research you should have most or all of the information in this book...
Put this does package it nicely... there is info on the Austrians, the Hungarians and also the Russians..
It’s a nice easy read...

Sorry for not responding sooner. Thank you for your reply. Great to read of your interest. The range is coming along and hopefully in the future I would like to commission a 7lb howitzer barrel and crew manhandling an artillery piece. In the mean time there are drummers to add to the various units that have been made already.

Latest green of a Honved Officer standing with shouldered sword in shako. This was a head swap from the German Legion officer just recently completed.
