1066 & all that
« on: May 26, 2016, 01:51:03 AM »
I've been painting up a bunch of Saxons and Normans for the 950th anniversary of 1066. The plan is to do Fulford Gate, Stamford Bridge, and Hastings in October. Our club (NWA in Melbourne) has it's annual Pirates in September events throughout the whole of September so October has been set for all of the battles.

I've now finished the Saxons and I'm painting Normans too. We're not yet settled on the rules but at this stage Hail Caesar is looking like the one. So the list below is for those rules. Standard unit size is 12 figures with the large unit of huscarls at 24 figures.

Both the left and right wings have:
2 units of Heavy Infantry (thegns),
2 units of Medium Infantry (Fyrd), and
A small unit of skirmishers.

Harold's central command has:
1 large unit of Huscarls with Dane Axes,
1 unit of hearth warriors,
2 units of Danish Mercenaries, and
A small unit of skirmishers.

Anyway, I set up a photo shoot for the brave Anglo-Saxon lads with more pics at my blog:

Edit: The figures are a mix from Eureka, Saxon Miniatures, Gripping Beast (metals and plastics) and anything else that I had or found.

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Ooh, that's an impressive army you've got there! I hope the Normans turn out just as well. I'm especially excited to see some kite shields in there, one of my wargaming peeves is Saxons at Hastings with round shields: they don't have them on the Bayeux Tapestry.

Those are some fine looking Saxons!  :)

Looking forward to seeing the Norman invaders, as well as the battle AARs anon.

Cheers,
