Varnish disasters

Help!

I've been using Humbrol Matt 49 enamel varnish for years. I bought a couple of pots recently, both milky white instead of transparent, took them back. Shop said nothing wrong with them but exchanged them - new one the same. Thought I'd give it a go; big mistake, milky film on figure. Changed to acrylic varnish (still Humbrol), same story, milky white in pot and translucent film over figure.

1) What (if anything) am I doing wrong?
2) What matt varnish do you recommend?
3) I am sure that I saw an article in one of the magazines a few years ago on what to do in the event of a varnish disaster but, inevitably, cannot find it - does anyone have it to hand, or have a technique for salvaging figures covered in milky varnish?

Thanks very much

Painting a gloss varnish over the top will usually get rid of the white then reapply the matt.

Windsor and Newton Galleria Acylic matt varnish should sort you out once you have got rid of the milky finish as per theoldschool's suggestion.

I glossed yesterday and today they are - glossy white! I've done what I perhaps should have done earlier and read all the related posts on here and I understand that I have one more go at this and then they are dead. Wish me luck...

I really don't know what to suggest as a fix but if you're thinking of changing to something else from the Humbrol then you could try Revell instead. I've been using it for years and it's always been good. Store the tins upside down and only use the varnish from the underside of the lid for the best matt finish.
