Donnybrook action in the Low Countries
« on: June 06, 2016, 05:51:38 PM »
I finally managed to get my first game of Donnybrook over the weekend. I used my Dutch revolt figures and played a fairly simple scenario. We had a great game and I fully intend to name every Character and make cards and things for the units. I want to get some cavalry painted for both sides and get another game in with a more varied board as soon as poss.

Cheers

Rules are Donnybrook and they give a fast and flavoursome game. I'll tweak them a little bit for the next game but I go into them in depth on the blog.

Lovely looking set up you've got there. How did you find Donnybrook?

I really liked it. It's simple enough to allow the scenario to take the lead while being flexible enough to allow you to taylor it to your own needs. It certainly encourages a more character fi style of play. Each of your Hero's and Characters deserve to have a bit more individuality about them to encourage that role playing element. I'm looking forward to my next game.

Interesting game and great looking figures. I recently picked up the Osprey En Garde rules set. I've sadly not managed to get it out in anger yet due to being too busy with 'normal' life. But the rules you used sound very similar. Do you know of the other and have you got a preference?

Donnybrook is a great game for a bunch of folk running around shooting at each other and knocking lumps out of each other. The lack of stats and the use of the ability dice means that most stuff is dealt with really quickly and there i son need to look up stuff in the book or on charts. En Garde on the other hand is for maybe half a dozen figures per side with the focus on the individual rather than the group. Combat is far more complex and requires a bit of head maths and chart checking. It depends what kind of game you like. I was looking for something a bit more robust and knock about with scope for messing with which is why I plumped for Donnybrook. I have tried 7TV as well and will probably try Pikeman's Lament when that comes out as well.

Terrific table setup. I have had a lot of fun with En Garde but still haven't tried out Donnybrook. I must get me a game some time soon....

I didn't really use any of the lists out of the books and just treated both sides as army factions. I counted the Dutch as drilled and the Spanish as Elite although I could have split the Dutch between recruit and Drilled (if i'd had enough figures!). However as I play more games I'll look for different kinds of characters to include in the forces as this will give me the option to include the characters from the Gothique games http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72329.0
I had a quick chat on my Blog with Clarence H and he reckons Fantasy elements will work fine. I also want to try out some Caribbean shenanigans with same figures, I've got some of the Foundry renegades on the way in order to do so.
First thing first is get some cavalry done for both sides which I'm on my way to doing. First up, Reiters for the dutch.

I picked up the rules for use with my portuguese in brazil gaming in mind but havent gotten around to trying them out. I think the lists are flexible to mix and match very well and the supernatural element should tie in nicely for you
