Gunbirds D-Day Speed Build - C-47 with a twist
« on: June 10, 2016, 12:12:15 AM »
I want to start Normandy stuff now so I can game with them next year. And what do I always do for a project? Build scenery. So I am going to build a wreck (next to the Sherman....that was started before the Build so I'm not going to do that, a build demands (IMHO) something new and fresh). A big wreck!

Here is the kit that I'm going to use and going to open right after posting this.

And some inspirational pictures that I'm going to have to work with.

Plan is to do the rough cutting first, and keep an eye for the storage solutions for it, so wings both seperate and hull split in 2, based in such a way that it all adds up. Also, this will be a good a time as any to test out some of those pure white and black weathering powders.

Edit: Bye bye 20 euro airplane, welcome  big pile of plastic scrap!

Are those wings correct? They look too long to me. Or am I thinking of another plane?

You be the judge. Probably the foreshortening effect of the missing fuselage because the bottom photo is the same kit.

Looking forward to seeing the finished model. As it happens, I'm doing something similar with an old Tamiya 1/48 Mitsubishi Raiden.

As far as I know the wings are correct? They migth seem a bit off as they will be detatchable for storage purposes.

Antibiotics suck, they are draining me of my energy so things are going slow.

Hull is almost ready, tail is ready, loose bits all complete except for the rudder that needs to be based. Now to base the wings, 1 slightly tilted up, the other flat on the floor, wreck the engines, bend the propes and get everything sanded and wrecked enough so that I can coat primer tomorrow morning, then tape it all off for the green coat and the D-Day stripes. Awash in decals now, picked up an old Esci pack for next to nothing with plenty of Yank and Brit decals, only to see that the Brit aircraft is in a different colour to the American one. Since the wreck is dual use for Normandy and Arnhem I think I will stick to painting olive drab or British armour for a lighter tone.....not that you can see lots of it as most of the wreck will be black and white.

Right, carry on. Wings.

Dead tired, but the build part is 99% done! Tomorrow morning props and little details I can think of.

Getting there. Hope my paintjob can do it justice though.....

Not every aircraft made it back home on D-Day. This is my homage to the ones that didn't make it back. I poured my soul into it, but I think it fell short of what it could have been, I was overambitious given the timeframe, I think I can do better but I simply ran out of time.

You be the judge.
