Napoleonic Skirmish with Combat Patrol
« on: June 20, 2016, 11:02:16 AM »
Yesterday, my son Lewis and I had our first trial game of Combat Patrol Napoleonic Skirmish. Buck, the author had warned us that the rules were very much a first draft, work in progress, but we very very keen to give them a go. We were new to playing Napoleonics with 28mm figures rather than 6mm figures so their were a few unpainted figures (and an unpainted building) on the table. However, this did not distract from our enjoyment. We had a fantastic game. The results were believable and the rules were streamlined and easy to use.

Combat Patrol is a set of WW2 skirmish rules that use an innovative card based system for combat resoloution, but because the core mechanics are so solid, they are easily transfered to other periods. Their is already a free supplement for 1980 / Winter of '79 style gaming and 1939 Winter War. I've heard a number og gamers talking about using rules for Vietnam and supplements are on their way for Horse & Musket, Falklands, VBCW and many more.

I've painted up this little unit of 12 Voltigeurs made from the Victrix Early War French Infantry box set ready for next game of Combat Patrol Napoleonics. I have mounted them on Sally 4th Clear bases as I want them to look right in Flanders, Portugal and Spain.... and also in a town or in India or Egypt.

On Sunday I will be having another play test game for Buck to check out the cavalry vs infantry and cavalry vs cavalry rules, so should be able to post an update on how it went next week.

Last night we played 'Foraging Parties'

In this scenario both the British and the French had sent out small detachments of infantry with an escort of mounted Dragoons for protection to gather in additional supplies from local villages.

The game was a lot of fun. Combat Patrol worked very well as a Horse & Musket skirmish rule set. (We were using a playtest version of the Napoleonic supplement, and activation and action decks from the core rules).

In the scenario victory points were awarded for foraging for supplies.

Last bank holiday was bright and still so we decided to take in the sun and do our wargaming on the patio.

The scenario was again based on foraging parties out liberating supplies, but this game was the first outing for my newly painted Rifles and Spanish infantry.

We played using Combat Patrol Horse and Musket supplement, which is soon to be released as a free supplement to go with Combat Patrol WW2 skirmish rules.

Yes, it was a great game and very unusual for sunshine to be comined with lack of any wind, here in Yorkshire.
It would have felt wrong to be shut away inside on such a lovely day.

Combat Patrol Napoleonics, or strictly speaking Horse and Musket is in playtest at the moment. I will try to find out from Buck when he thinks it will be released. It uses standard Combat Patrol rulebook and cards. The supplement will probably be a free download from our websites.

Just to let you know that the Combat Patrol Napoleonic supplement is released today. This is a free PDF download. Each player will also need a set of Combat Patrol cards. The cards are used for all Combat Patrol periods (WW2, Falklands etc). This is the first Horse & Musket period supplement for Combat Patrol, others are in the pipeline.

The Napoleonic skirmish supplement can be downloaded from Sally 4th (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Combat-Patrol) as well as Buck's Combat Patrol page.

On our Combat Patrol page their is also a great little video that Wargames Illustrated made that illustrates the core mechanics of Combat Patrol.
