Advice needed on painting Apophis mini by Andrew Mae
« on: June 25, 2016, 02:34:38 PM »
I'm planning on using Andrew Rae's new Apophis the Serpent God figure in my next Pulp Alley convention game July 9, and I am having a creative brain freeze. I just can't decide on what color his flesh should be.  o_o

I'm leaning towards either pale caucasian flesh or pale green thinking that a pale shade will have an unearthly look and also really allow those tattoos to pop out.

If anyone has painted this fine figure yet, or even if you haven't, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Or better yet, post a picture!  :D

Thanks for reminding me about this figure, I saw a preview a few months ago and made a metal note to get it so I have just ordered one.
For what it's worth I'll be painting mine in human flesh tones.

I went gold (gold!) with glowing hieroglyphs. They were nice an easy to do - flooded the area with really thinned white, then a thinned glaze/wash of a mix of yellow and blue ink, then another lighter wash of thinned white. :)

@Steve: Thanks!

Tried fluorescent paints for the tattoos, not entirely successful  :?

Two great looking options from Andrew Rae & Soldado there. Was probably going to go with some fairly naturalistic deep black skintones, but am still to decide whether the runes should be red/orange or blue/green, with both lightening towards white.

What about using the colours of Apocalypse from the new Xmen film? And then use the light blue or a purple/pink for the glowing glyphs?

Exactly!!!  :-*

Originally, I imagined him as very pale grey/white. Mila decided to go with a light green, which also looks cool.

That gold one looks awesome, so we may have to make one like that too.  ;)

But I'd like to see one in black.....  lol

Here's my take on the mini.  I went for a grey stone look and the pulp alley book description has yellow eyes so i carried that to the runes.  It's my first attempt at glowing effect and while I'm happy with the results I'm tempted to give it a wash with ogryn flesh for a bit more depth although I'm nervous it'll ruin the results so far.

Sorry I'm late to this thread.

Very nice! The contrast between the grey skin and the glow works well.

I wouldn't go for an Ogryn Flesh wash, it will likely dull things down and fill where it's yellow. If your hand is feeling steady, perhaps some pin pricks of thinned white where the yellow is most concentrated? If it's too much you can always reglaze the white with yellow.
