I think rather large insects fit the bill. A proper Centipede comes to mind.

Here's a proper centipede. :D

Very cool. I like that guy a lot.
What about one of those cave spider type creatures for a mount. It would be too spindly but I think they look freaky and would fit kobolds very well.

That's nicely done! Man, its tiny...

What a fantastic beast! Never seen that before.

Amblypygids, More easily remembered as (as mentioned) cave spiders, tailless whipscorpions, and in spanish-speaking countries, cankles. (Which I would prefer if it wasn't already terrible slang for swollen ankles) Though they're not spiders (order Aranaea) or scorpions (order Scorpiones) but their own separate order, Amblypygi, within Arachnida. They're called tailless whipscorpions because their whips are their first pair of extremely long legs, adapted into feelers, as opposed to the whipscorpions of order Thelyphonida, which have their 'whips' at the end of their abdomens. :D

I used to have a couple of small ones, back when I kept things with too many legs. They sit still most of the time but move like lightning. You can barely see it, almost like teleportation.

Khurasan used them as the model for their 'Arachnian' aliens, though while I don't blame them for leaving off the spindly parts, I think there's still room for a few different gaming-miniatures interpretations...

As much as I like these creeps - I somehow think that they might be a bit to fiddly as a model to be honest.
For the first 'allied monster' I've settled on a centipede.

If these Kobolds are cast in metal, I'm throwing some money at you.  Looking great!

Very nice. I sculpted a mutant centipede a while ago. Ended up looking quite good and vicious.

I didn't comment earlier simply because I've never had occasion to paint a Kobold or see one in a RPG...they are just too twinky/fragile. HOWEVER, your Little Dog Faced Guy is JUST TOO COOL to maintain my prejudice. AND the centipede has potential to be just as cool. OUTSTANDING WORK!
I'd NEVER join a club that would have me as a member.  G.Marx
