Wondering what's most used. If it's some other published set, please specify which. Thanks.

It has been a long time since I gamed Marlburian Wars, but back then it was in 25mm with the "Warfare in the Age of Reason" rules (with basing amendments for 4 and 5 rank infantry deployment).

We have been using Black Powder with our own amendments  https://lasthussar.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/war-of-spanish-succession-for-black-powder/

I recently tried a game of Honours of War, with the amendments published on the HoW forum and that worked well.

Warfare in the Age of Reason.  A very good set of rules, nice campaign system and siege rules. The latter is useful as the majority of battles in the period were actually sieges. There is a good unofficial modified basing system for the Marlburian period out there too that factors in the differing formation types/ firing systems.

We use Twilight of the Sun King rules for large battles (20 battalions plus per player). Polemos Great Northern War rules (they work for Marlburian as well) for mid sized battles (10 to 20 battalions per player). Finally an upcoming amendment to extend these rules, http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/WWAE.htm, to cover this era for small battles (5 to 10 battalions per player).

I use Captain General from the Pike and Shot society. A great set of rules that is very period specific, I also use it for the League of Augsburg.

What I love about the rules is that they give a feel for the difference between rank and volley fire, the size of the units is the same however the rank firing are deeper so you also get a visual of the diff.

They have a very interesting take on command and control, which works great to capture the difficulty of maneuvering units on the battle field.

I definitely prefer Volley & Bayonet: it is simple, easy to play, historically accurate and it has a lot of fun. It applies to all periods [from the Marlburian to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870] and [comparing to any other set  know] it is fast !!!. This is very important especially if you don't have 6 or 7 hours to spend for a game. Almost every game I have played has lasted less than 5 hours [including the set up and packing all the figures, buildings etc after the game]. I do love Marlburian period and I have played Schellemberg recently...A very succesful game-and historically accurate. [I have to post an afterbattle report some day]. Yet, I have to admit that I don't know many sets of rules and V&B might seem  a rather "old"  set of the '80s...

I have played with this ruleset. It is good and it has some good ideas in it [such as the changing of initiative, or the impetuous cavalry charges], but it is very slow [for my taste]. Moreover, alternating initiative between players or commands, becomes tiring after a while. I think Maurice with its card system is better, but you can't play historical scenarios with Maurice. Impossibledue to randomness ...

Oh and for skirmishes there's always Donnybrook. I have a copy but haven't tried it yet. I must say it's stable mate Under the Lily Banners didn't do much for me.

Black Powder.  Simple & easily remembered rules that give a good game.  We don't have time to keep track of too many different rules systems.
