(AP 2016) Napoleonic Austrians
« on: July 10, 2016, 07:02:40 PM »
OK - my hat is in the ring for Army Painter 2016.  For a long while now I have wanted to refight the Battle of Dresden 1813 using the Age of Eagles rule set.  I have the French, Russians and Prussians but no Austrians...so I'm using AP 2016 to apply the peer pressure to at least get started on Schwartzenberg's forces.

My order of AB miniatures from Fighting 15s  arrived last week.  They are all 1813 Austrian German Infantry in shakos, all very white and very dull......no Hungarians or Grenadiers to liven things up.....but that's why I need the peer pressure from AP 2016.  The plan is to paint a Division of 6 Regiments each of 24 figures plus 4 guns during AP 2016 timescales.  If I do that easily then I'll stretch the target to double that...although with all that white I expect I'll suffer from snow blindness if I do that many.

Some photos of the raw material as it arrived:

The painting starts now!  Wish me luck!

Paddy

Just finished my third stand of my own AB Austrians ... be interesting to see how yours come out. Looks like we're working on similar projects!

I'm doing mine for the southwest corner of Leipzig as I have some Russians to tie in with them, and of course loads of French. :)

Work in progress.....

I've decided to do the marching units first and paint in batches of 2 units of 24.  So here is the first 2 units copydexed onto painting bases and then undercoated.

Sorry for the poor photography.

First unit will probably be Infantry Regiment ‘Kaiser Franz’ Nr #1 with Dark Red facings.

A photo from early in the week.  Still very much work in progress but first units block painted ready for the wash and then detail.  The figures always look a bit scruffy at this stage.

First unit will be  Infantry Regiment #1 "Kaiser" with dark red facings.  Progressing well this week but think that I'll only have the first unit painted and not based by 1 Aug.  So what with one thing and another a bit slower than originally planned.

I made some really good progress this weekend...but forgot to take any WIP photos and haven't managed to get around to doing the bases.

So here is an early photos of Infantry Regiment #1 "Kaiser" which is my August Regiment.

Great work! Having just done my own first regiment of AB Austrians, I like the dual flags (I went with just one) but I added a mounted officer to my command stand.

More! More!

They have come out really nice, amazing how the detail lifts them so much.  I do not envy you painting that detail though.

Thanks Guys.

Great work! Having just done my own first regiment of AB Austrians, I like the dual flags (I went with just one) but I added a mounted officer to my command stand.

A single flag is probably more historic...but I like flags.  I just went with the packaging from Fighting 15s.  5 packets of Inf plus 1 packet of Command = 2 Regiments.  The flags were printed off (free) from warflag.  http://www.warflag.com/napflags/html/flags.htm Nice idea adding a mounted officer.  I might try that with later regiments.....but will also need to paint up several Divisional Generals first.

They have come out really nice, amazing how the detail lifts them so much.  I do not envy you painting that detail though.

The detail isn't too bad on these.  I'm trying a new techniques for me.  I'll try to take some WIP photos with the next batch but from the block painted stage I just black ink (Army Painter) the whole figure and then paint over the white highlights for the uniform and the detail comes up a treat.  The with flesh paint highlights over nose chin cheeks and jaw and the faces come up a treat.  So the only real bits of detail are on the musket and flagstaffs and drums/drummers.

The only problem with Austrians though is the snow blindness from all that white!
