Building two Martian Sky Galleons: Part 1
« on: July 14, 2016, 06:31:27 PM »
I made some more progress in my Barsoom project. Inspired by the magnificent models by Tre Games I decided to build my own. The TG models are 15mm scale (except for one), heftily priced and sport a LOT of deck buildings that severely restrict the playing space on the decks.

As usual I started with some sketches. When you're curious you can see more on my blog.

Excellent.

I can't believe you just sketched some outlines, then cut stuff, and had a sky galleon! Marvellous.

Well, that's over simplifying things a bit. The sketches led to more detailed drawings, which in turn led to a parts inventory. Based on that I made measured drawings of each part directly on the MDF or used cardboard shapes to easily copy them on the MDF.

Then I cut all parts from the MDF and sanded them to fit. Especially where parts slotted into the hull or wing hardpoints the fit needed to be very good. It included some trial and error  :)

There, there...(pat on back) It's okay - we have all been there....

Beautiful work on these, Pijlie.

Don't spoil the magic!!

Its great to see something come to life off the page, its even more impressive knowing that there is a lot of hard work in the middle!

Have you hand cut the pieces, or do you have access to a laser cutter?

The railing fence was made by a friend with a laser cutter, but all other parts were cut with an electric jig saw.

Look alive Doug! Be inspired!

I was. After Froggy's Rim Greaper, I started cutting away on my toy carrier. Remove a bit here, a bit there, and it's starting to cause my imagination to kick in.

Then you do... that.

Sinew says 'There, there...(pat on back) It's okay - we have all been there....'

True enough, but then he starts humming Tubthumping, and proceeds to build a flotilla of flying patrol craft for a joint Scandinavian force...  :'(

Just teasing: I just started on the starboard side of the CVN 65.. Hacking away,  mind  you. Actual building...   :-X

Hi Pijlie,

Great work on this craft! Looking forward to seeing it completed.

But for access to a laser cutter  :)...

Cheers

Finally carved the two pieces I had squeezed out, and the 'box' of the fore section is complete, as well as the 'flying deck,' but was I so chagrined, I fixed on the MS/F Grippen Mire for now.

As for when I'll focus on the beautiful Martain beast...  :-X
