After some time away from our CWC gaming we were back giving Dr. Zombies yanks a go. We played a encirclement scenario with 4000 points each and the soviets as defenders.
The soviets deployed with their force split in two groups of mixed T72 and BMP2’s with infantry (blue and yellow arrow) and a third force of three T64 AGTM (red arrow)staying back and providing covering fire. They brought along three units of SAM’s to fend of the inevitable US air force attacks.
On their first turn the soviets made good progress but ended up bottled up between a hill and a narrow street. The idea had originally been to advance in two columns but the soviet commanders apparently couldn’t resist the opportunity for cover.
The Americans first attack came from the left inform of three Abrahams and three Bradley’s. They attacked the soviet forces around the hill. First the T72’s were suppressed and then they were attached by the Bradley’s. Only one out of three T72 survived.
After that came the attacks from the skies. First in the form of an A10 which was repulsed by a barrage of SAM missiles.
Then two Cobra attack helicopters swooped in and using the cover of the hill managed to dodge the hail of SAM missiles. They targeted the BMP’s so that by the end of the first round of US attack only one BMP and one T72 was left of the original soviet attack column.
Now the US right attack in form of three Abraham’s was sprung. They took up position in a tree line at the end of the narrow street that the soviets were headed down.
The soviet commanders tried to take then out with two Hind gunships, but precise fire from the yank SAM’s send then of and made no impression on the Abrahams.
Close up of Dr. Zombies very neat missile firing models used when the model fires.
Now things went from really bad to complete disaster as the soviet forward commanders including the CO missed their command roles for two turn in a row. Finally the backup T64 had to move forward to assist, even though it meant they couldn’t use their ATGW’s as their gun came within range. They engaged the Abraham’s on the left flank.
There was no saving the soviet forward forces though and after a very successful round of airstrikes from the A10 and Cobra gunships most of the AFV where either burning or suppressed.
When the Americans started launching airassaults from Chinooks and Black Hawks (which were initially beaten of by CO and Hq AA fire) and rumors circled that they contained Marines and combatengineers the Russians threw in the towel (well actually one went home and I colndn’t find the motivation to continue on my own).
When the dust settled it was a complete and utter victory for the Americans. The soviets had made very little way and lost most of their fighting forces. Of course losing two turns in a row didn’t help the Russians, but their real problem was the initial moves that bottled them up and made it very easy for the Americans to neutralize then without having to expose then selves.
Fire and movement, fire and movement.
That’s the answer!
