Games to play on Hex terrain?
« on: January 26, 2009, 11:15:24 PM »
On a related note to my last post….

So, I'm buying some 4" hex terrain tiles.  My primary reason for doing this is to play Battlelore.  I might buy Memoir 44 and definitely want to get Battle Cry eventually, so I'll get enough use out of it...but it made me start wondering what other games are played on large hex terrain like this?

I already found Horde & Heroes, which looks a lot like HotT so far.  What other games are out there that you think are really good?

I say really good because I don't want a bunch of random games mentioned simply because they are played on hexes, but, rather a solid list of really well designed and fun games that have withstood some time and tests.

I'm primarily interested in the following:

-Games with a fantasy or science fiction themes rather than serious historical
-Games that are fairly self contained, and not overly complex
-Games that are gamish, not those that try overly hard to simulate realism

Thanks

Strangely enough that's the ONLY site I've actually been to where I found Big Hex based games :).

I was kind of hopeing to find something to scratch my sci fi bug.  Something with squads on single bases, and tanks, and giant robots and such.

For example, you could play Battletech with big figures (1/144 or 1/72nd scale Plastic kits, if you can find those...).

Or some larger-scale helicopter action like that "Low Level Hell" game the Warlords put on a decade ago at several shows in the UK.

Here's an adaptation of the old Space Crusade game for bigger sci fi battles on hexes:

Afriboria, by fellow LAFer Geudens.

Very enjoyable, fast moving, easy to learn and gives very believable results. Works well for solo, two or multi-player games.

Oh and it's FREE  :D

Thank you for your nice appreciation!  Although we've written a number of rules now (late WW2, "There's a war on, you know..." (Dad's Army fun game) both in the pipeline and 3ECW just started), Afriboria is still the biggest hit.

You mention solo...  Here's how I play it.  Proceed as per game rules, but - when changing sides - take two command cards instead of one (the ones most likely to obtain the best result in the current situation for the side given).  Cast 1D6.  1-3 and card n° 1 is activated, 4-6 for card 2.  Simple, but since the cards offer a variety of tactics and moves, you always get an acceptable result that blocks you from "taking sides".
