Kings of War Historical
« on: August 17, 2016, 03:12:32 PM »
On the Beasts of War site they state that Mantic has plans for a Kings of War Historical to be released in the near future.  They state that historical armies can be played with mythical creatures against the existing fantasy armies they have for the game.  I did not see a date for the release of this book.  Does anyone have additional information?

Will the book include Samurai list with options for ninjas, warrior monks, dragons and/or fu dogs?

What makes them different from the fantasy version?

The core rules for the game are pretty much the same, the main difference is the army lists.

I think there are 31 army lists or "themes" in the book which define which units the army may take from a core master list of units as well as any extra specific units and or rules and army has available.

The master list is based on the Kingdoms of Men from the KoW v2 rule book with the fantasy elements removed and more historical troop types added in their place. There are no spells or magic items as such either.

The mythical elements are an addition for those who want to add the odd creature of saga and legend - obviously this is optional and strictly with opponent's consent.

There is a list covering feudal Japan. I can't comment on the mythical elements as I think they underwent a revision after the core lists had been finished.

The list of themes has been shared over on the Mantic forums.

Quote
Barbarians
Carthaginians
Chinese
Egyptians
Greeks
Huns
Indian
Macedonians & Successors
Persians
Romans
Spartans
Scythians
Thracians
Anglo-Saxons
Byzantines
Franks
Normans
Polish
Slavs
Vikings
Crusaders
Japanese
Mongols
Ottomans
English
Aztecs
Conquistadors
French
Holy Roman Empire
Scottish

If your preferred army isn't on there then don't despair - it is highly likely you will be able to construct it from the master list or using one of the other themes as a base.

Huzzah! I'll definitely be purchasing the book; let's see how the Mongols get on invading China when they run into an army of Qin terracotta warriors (aka Empire of Dust).  ;D

While I have no interest in fantastical regimented gaming I have been impressed with the few KoW battle reports I've accidentally watched parts of (on blogs/podcasts etc.).  Could be a solid idea --- and since Warhammer Historicals closed up shop I think there is enough of an audience for the stuff.

Does that mean that units can freely move through each other? I kinda like it in the Fantasy game as
it allows for speedy gameplay, but I wonder if that will fell right in historical settings.

I guess I'll see when they're out. :--)

You mean in the sense that the Republican Roman maniples moved through each other to get fresher troops to the front?if so then I'd say there's your historical precedent

I always knew somehow that the Scottish would be the end of history.

Haha, come on you know what I mean!
I like Kings of War, and I will most likely give the historical edition a go, but I somehow want to know if I get more than a KoW with 20 new armies that aren't allowed any giants and unicorns! ;--)
