This 3-level piece is called a Lego Truck Trailer Base/Chassis:

The one I picture above looks to be about 2" wide by 9" long.

What if one were to make the rest of the hull below with stacked layers of extruded polystyrene (XPS, blue/pink foam), and then use a foam cutter to shape it, so that its sides are flush with the edges of the Lego base?  And then go on to add a thick card stock deck surface, etc?

Thoughts?

Dan
PS.  There is a longer and more rectangular version as well:

PPS.  The Lego piece also reminds me a bit of the "land galleons" drawn by book cover artist James Gurney:

That would definatly work if I had it rattling around in my bits box. If not, by the amount of work you describe, it would be easy enough to also build it from scratch so I wouldn't go out and buy it seperatly.

Ps: those land galleons are awesome, I'm saving those pics for future reference. Thanks for posting them.

Stroezie,

I love them too.  Check out Gurney's blog entry:

Have to agree with Strozie on this one, though knowing that there ARE flat Lego pieces to cover the top mitigates that a bit. If I found it amongst the grandson's collection, with plenty of things to try on it...

Piccie definitely piece to take from your post, though.

Thanks, Dan!

I saw those in posts on TMP; if I were a woodworker, I'd have suggested a bandsaw and block of wood or PS foam might be a better start, as he pretty much covers it anyway.

However, such impressive work hardly should tolerate comments from me.  ;)
