Roller droids
« on: September 17, 2016, 12:51:48 PM »
I've always liked the idea of a 15mm droid army. There are plenty options out there for regular infantry, but I would love to have something like the destroyer droids from StarWars, rolling machines with fold out legs. I've probably spent the past two years churning on how I could design something like that without it beeing too much of a rip-off.
Today, I present my try at this concept, fresh from 3d printer. Not even primed just wash and drybrush straight over the printer material.  :D

The weapons are removable and interchangeable. I have improved versions drying right now, railguns with a bit shorter barrels and more detailed undersides as well as making some details on the other ones a bit bigger in the places where they were at risk of disappearing. (such as the shut lines on the missile hatches)

If you look closely you can spot what most will assume are print lines. Not so! Most of the regular patterns are in fact my printer printing so precisely that the .stl mesh structure is recreated on the model! I shall need to export a higher poly version of it for the next print.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with them. The main body and legs convey the look I was aiming for, the weapons I'm not sold on yet but they are modular so that is an easy fix. My girlfriend declared them "cute" like the turrets from portal so that's a win for sure.

Interesting concept and design.  Not sure it needs 3D printing though.  Kitbashing something similar out of (say) a few buttons and some plasticard seems like it might be quicker, although your way lets you reproduce them en masse, I guess.

Making the legs would be fiddly, and finding a way to the feet that actually fit into the body would be quite hard. But something similar could easily be scratch build for sure!

Here is a quick size comparison since their tiny scale does not show well from the pictures.

Trying, just for a laugh the GZG droid head on it I noticed that a roundish flat shield on the weapons does look very nice, so I will do a version of the weapons like that next.

You could even make the weapons as pop-out turrets akin to the legs.  Maybe do a variant with more of a rounded shape than the wheel design you've currently got?

I made a couple more adjustments, mostly minor ones that don't even show up in these pictures but I also tried a version with a smoother weapon mount. What do you guys think, details or smooth?

Going to quote that when I try selling them.  :D

Pop up turret might be an idea, I kinda like the notion of the weapons folding in during movement. (more like destroyer droids) I'm rather in love with the way the legs look right now. Making them round would be a bit redundant no? A wheel with fold out legs, which have wheels on them?  o_o

Smooth weapons - the flamer almost looks too heavy.

And I think Hobby Services was referring to the main wheel - more road racer wheel than mountain bike.

Yes.  Maybe make the main wheel more spherical, with the sides popping out as gun turrets when stopped.

lol hence me saying the wishlist. That thing is miles long. But I really do like these. As with everything, living on this side of the world, shipping is always overseas and expensive. (Does that mean I should just buy loads of them, don't quote me on that)  ;)
