I am a complete tyro dropping into the middle of this mess...

While I was running a game at a local con recently, my teenage son wandered over to the next table and dropped into a demo of a game system I had never been interested in.  The sign on the table said "Dust Tactics".   He came back raving about the game.  My buddy the vendor happened to have a "used" Dust Tactics core set for sale, cheap.  Turns out everything was still in the packaging, untouched, unpunched, brand new.  So we brought it home, painted everything up, and played a game.

At which point my son got angry, because it wasn't the same game.  They hadn't played with squares.  They played with measuring tapes, like a real wargame.  So I started looking online. And there was this Dust Warfare thing.  So I ordered the rulebook, which is supposed to arrive tomorrow.  And then I found this other site, with a free set of rules called Dust 47.

And then I finally got smart and came back here, to those who know, and started reading this forum.  And I see that I (thankfully) missed 3 years of drama over a failed kickstarter.  And that a lot of people liked the game, but are now sour on it.  I'm waiting one year for some KS bits, I can't imagine waiting 3.

Well, that's the problem.  We like the game.  The minis in the original box were amazingly detailed, as were the mechs.  The rules are suitably quick and bloody.  It's a fun game, and we want to play it more.

  • But which version?  We like measuring, not squares
  • What is Konflict 47?  Are they interchangeable?
  • And people keep posting, "I only bought the minis for SoTR".  What is SoTR?

This genre is attracting my teenage son more than any other we play, so I want to encourage it.  And OK, mechs are now cool.  But what direction do we go?

There are basically two games set in the Dust universe: Dust 1947 (known as Dust Tactics in the previous edition) and Dust Warfare. The latter has been conceived as "real open-top wargame" from the get-go while DT/D47 was originally a boardgame that was played on a grid map but later got expanded into an open table game under the title Dust Tactics Battlefield.

Note the term "expanded" since DTB still lived in the same book with DT and featured a minimum number of rules changes to facilitate gridless gaming. This procedure has continued with the latest edition D47 but the open tabletop rules now don't have a specific name, they are just listed as "playing on a 3D battlefield" or something of that sort.  DW uses the same unit cards as DT did at the time it came out (now the card's have changed a bit) but the rules aren't very compatible otherwise.

If you like to play quick games without a grid, I would go with D47. You can find the rulebook online but the earlier edition unit cards don't work 100% as they've added a March Move (which you can fudge of course but then again, what can't you fudge if you are so inclined). I'm not sure about DW's status but it definitely isn't something that plays all that quickly -- even tho it has been touted as "large battles game" it has much more involved rules than D47.

No. K47 is a WWWII game by Warlord, based on Bolt Action: https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/konflikt-47

It stands for Secrets of the Third Reich, which is another separate WWWII game: http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=9

Both K47 and SoTR are probably a bit more involved than D47. I haven't actually played either of them tho.

HTH.

So now I have to paint up one of these.  My 13-year old son looked at it and said, "compensating much, Dad?"  Where do kids learn this?

You could probably mix Dust and Konflikt stuff but most of the Dust guys will look about 7 foot 5" and the "real" vehicles will be a bit too big for the Konflikt/Bolt Action guys. With Walkers, you'd just need smaller pintle mounted machine guns, if that sort of thing bothers you.

Konflikt has a super-soldier who comes with the Konflkit '47 rulebook, as a bonus, if you order from Warlord directly, and he is the size of a DUST mini so DUST squads in they might work as super soldiers and such. Dusk powered armors should work fine because Dust and Bolt Action/Konflict heads are about the same size and you can usually assume the armor makes up the bulk difference in body size, excepting maybe the Phasar-gun commandos who are british/French Foreign Legion with their arms stuck out of the suit, Gears of War style.

Basically here are the Weird War games I know of in 28-ish mm.

Secrets of the Third Reich/Incursion  -West Wind Miniatures.  These are mostly in a 1/56 scale.

Secrets is a table-top wargame, while Incursion is more of a board game.

------------------------------------

AE World War II Blackball games             AEWWII is in a 1/56 scale but has heroic figures.

------------------------------------

Konflikt '47 (A weird addendum to their Bolt-Action WW2 tabletop game) Konflikt and Bolt Action are scaled at 1/56 w/ big heads. It uses Italeri vehicle models but Rubicon will do nicely.

-------------------------------------

Dust Paolo Parente (formerly FFG, then BattleFront) Dust is scaled to 1/48 so it will work with tamiya and dragon vehicles.

http://www.dustgame.com/news.php

Dust Tactics a wargame on a made with area squares is obsolete and has been replaced with Dust Warfare but figures are compatible with online unit card downloads. Dust Warfare is the full open Table Top rules from FFG and apparently Paolo has abandoned it to be a "fan" run game.

Dust Adventures is an RPG

"Dust Battlefield" is the newest version of the rules but I don't know much of anything about it.

Victory Force has some WeirdWar II minis in a line called N.E.W. War. They also have lots of WW2 stuff. I'd say they are 1/56 but a little bit large for it.

Northstar (the people who do the FrostGrave has a Weird War II line called Projekt X  which is in 1/48

Here you have the Flames of War game,

ClockWork Goblin's stuff(like Konflikt 47 sized for Flames of War minis),

In regards to size differences, I don't know if there are any pix with BA and D47 minis side by side but on the page below you can find one with Incursion minis (which one assume to be compatible with SOTR minis) and another with the comparison shots most usual suspect AKA GW Space Marine:

They aren't topnotch since the different bases haven't been accounted for and they've been taken from an odd angle but they'll help a bit.
