Old West signs and posters
« on: September 19, 2016, 09:50:31 AM »
I've just started producing some Old West buildings and am looking for posters to decorate them.  I don't just want 'Wanted' but rather adverts and other commercial signs.

Is there anything out there?  Is the scale too small to read anything?

Thanks in advance.

I've managed to find a few, PM me with your e-mail address and I'll email them to you. Its a word document of wallpaper textures for building interiors and approx. 20 posters inc. wanted posters, Wild West era advertisements plus a few paintings I intended to use in my saloon interior.

4Ground buildings come with a bunch on their instruction sheets which are pretty nice - not sure if you can find a scan of them online, or if 4Ground can provide you with some.

Google image search for victorian old west advertisements. Wild Bill posters.  Or Victorian posters for the circus, freak shows, etc.

Even though the text might look tiny, pick some where the central image is prominent enough to give you an idea of the topic.  Here are some examples:

Or just trim the top and bottom of monochrome ads like this and print on off-white paper:

I went on Google and searched vintage signs and advertising, saved them and then resized them. I had some luck with model railroad advertisement signs from Woodland Scenics as well. There are some of the 4Ground signs too.

Pretty easy, just time consuming searching through page after page of signs  ::)
Good luck!

JArgo,

Are there any specific signs or posters you were looking for?  Are they for buildings you have already built and/or bought?  If so, what use will those buildings have in your town?  And what specific topics are you looking for your posters? Got a list in mind for each, for the signs and for the posters?

I might not be very mobile physically at the moment, and won't be for several more weeks, but I've got lots of time and can definitely dig for specific things online.  It would keep me from thinking so much about my aches and pains.

Just let me know if I can help with your search.

Dan

Hi Dan,

That's a very kind offer mate - sorry you're laid up.

A friend and I have just started scratch building really and we're going to do all the expected buildings like saloon, sheriff, undertaker etc.  I just did a building that could be the telegraph office so was wondering what they would have on their external wall.  Latest newspaper perhaps? Town ordinances?

My main concern is would the text be so small that it's not really worthwhile having too much detail.

I think Ivor13 has it down perfectly.  And I'd aspire to that.

But it seems that, if you can't carry a firearm, you can try Prickly Ash Bitters.  Must be one deadly drink!
Back from the dead, almost.

Lol.  Deadly stuff, it seems.  :)

You can always adorn with more than just signs.  I really like the cutout at the front of this gun shop in Dodge City:

This one was in a town in Utah, Corinne:

At first I thought that was a moose head in front of this building:

Then I found this clearer photo:

That picture from Corrine is a popular one in books and I've seen it before. What has always caught my eye is not the gun but what appears to be targets painted on the wooden box below. I would like to think it was advertising only, but given the gun culture of the age I suspect it may have been to allow buyer's to "test before purchase".
