Post Apocalyptic rules?
« on: September 20, 2016, 07:37:28 AM »
I'm interested in running both skirmish games with 5-20 models, Frostgrave and Necromunda type games and larger games with 20-50 models, with units and vehicles, Warmachine/Hordes type games set in the Fallout setting.

This is not a Test seems perfect for Fallout skirmish games, but I've read bad things about the rules, speficifally that ranged weapons are overpowered making it too difficult to play a melee gang and that the activation mechanics are wonky.

I havent read the rules myself yet though, but what are your experiences with TNT?

Any other Post Apocalyptic skirmish rules that you can recommend?

I havent found anything for larger Post Apocalyptic games. Maybe I'm searching to narrowly, perhaps I should be including sci fi and zombie apocalypse games?

Any suggestions?

There is a free set of rules called wastelands, it has a bit of frostgrave to it with base building and the like. (it's older though) I don't remember that much about it but the rules are free here: http://s1.zetaboards.com/Post_Apoc_Wargames/topic/4759552/1/ so give them a look.

I wrote a fallout rules set, which is heavily influenced by Necromunda. It's free, so easy to give it a spin :)

I think TwoHourWargames has some interesting rules - AllThingZombies and AfterTheHorsemen.

For skirmish games look no further than "Across the Dead Earth"

http://www.deadearth.co.uk/

Really great rules, has the same warband/rpg lite feel as the amazing "Wreck Age" but much more accessible for occasional games.

For the larger battles the older sets are still the best, Nick Lind's "Kill Zone" OOP but still fairly easy to find on download or the ShockForce/War Engine rules that have just been re-issued

If you want bigger games with flyers, tanks and such then the "No Limits" rules are probably the most flexible for building your own forces.

ATZ is indeed tons of fun and the narrative often writes itself.
The optional Risk and Reward card deck accelerates the building exploration greatly.

I like the TNT Rules! They have some edgy points that need a bit smoothing, but the author is very very committed to his product and brings tons of Feedback from the players back to the Ruleset. Just a few Days ago the new Version was updated and what I really like is that already bought stuff will give access to the newer Versions as well!
But if you just don´t like the Rules itself, I could recommend PulpAlley for Skirmish scaled games. Again a very committed author and very smooth balanced Rules that can easily adopted to your needs.

Another thumbs up for TNT. We have played it through most of this year and had a lot of fun. It is well written, well organised and presented with polish.

The activation system works just fine, creating a moderate amount of uncertainty and potential for initiative to pass to your opponent. That's a good thing. Maybe the back and forth could happen more often, but rest assured it happens.

Ranged combat requires you track who shot whom until the end of the current player turn when hits are resolved. That's a double-edged sword. It's cool because you never know for sure if a mini has been knocked out of action and so tend to hedge your bet by piling up shots on a target. But you need to track hits and who shot them 'cause you sure don't want to forget you nailed someone with a plasma weapon!

There are no vehicle rules.

The different forces, their background, units and options are all interesting and make for fun play. I am constantly tempted just to start another warband just to try out another colourful list.

The campaign system and 'scavenging mini-game' make for a very entertaining part of the whole experience. These are well thought out and not just tacked on at the end of the book.
Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

I used Malebolgia's system for a long time, but I have started using the Pulp Alley rules for my post-apoc madness.

@Malebolgia, i downloaded the rules and hope to find time at weekend to tryout. (will give a feedback later, after some rounds)

@Munindk, for Apocalypse, we ordered last Days the Ragers Rules from DishDash. Maybe you will have a look at that System....

I really enjoy TNT.  I'd like to try Pulp Alley as well, though less for PA and more just to have a nice general ruleset in my back pocket for weird games that don't have their own genre-specific rules.

There is no shortage of good post-apocalypse rules and I think each offers a different play experience.  Across the Dead Earth is a great and other rules mentions are solid options as well.  Other companies are coming into the genre, so you should find something to please.  If you want information on This Is Not a Test, feel free to check out this demo video from Guerilla Miniatures Games.

Happy hunting.
